Backstory

Not much is known about Matt Hagen personal life before his employment into the DEO, he grew up in Star City and lived a well off lifestyle that he didn’t seem to care much for. Matt supposedly had a brief internship at Star Labs where he worked as a security guard and this is where he met his fiancee, Doctor Peter Malley. After his internship he became a very successful and well known police officer and was then recruited for the very elusive agency the Department of Extranormal Operations due to his experience with dealing with the metahuman rogues of Star City. Before setting off to go join the DEO he made sure to propose to Peter, promising to marry him once he returned. 

During his brief employment at the DEO he went on 5 successful missions with his last one being a recon mission to the Amazon to find out what was causing such high levels of radiation. Upon discovering that the cause of the radiation was a polluted Lazarus Pit, Matt made an attempt to collect a sample of the Pit but slipped and was completely submerged in the Pit’s water and gave him a more melted and grotesque appearance. He discovered that his touch could melt people when he accidentally melted the left arm of his team’s leader, Sarge Steel. After this incident he was deemed a dangerous metahuman and was incarcerated.

During his time in a specialized confinement cell, Peter Malley, who was recently hired by the DEO, had developed a specialized suit for Matt Hagen so that he could live outside of his cell without harming anyone else. His agency at the DEO was restored and was given the codename “Agent Clay”. Unknown to the members of the DEO, corrupt agents had been selling DNA samples of Matt to bidders like the terrorist organisation Kobra and the corrupt business Daggett Industries.
