Hear me out:

Jewel thief Agatha. Private Investigator Gil. Target Tarvek.

Agatha tries to seduce Tarvek (to steal some heirlooms), who is playing homme fatale in an attempt to seduce Gil (for kicks), who is trying to seduce Agatha (to catch her in a lie so he can get her arrested).

They then end up In Cahoots, fake date to get Agatha into a Valois garden party, where Gil shows up to 'investigate' something on Tarvek's behalf (there's a lot of suspiciously homoerotic touching) to draw attention while Agatha tries to steal things, and then.

Someone kills Auntie Margarella!

And now this entire party is looking to Gil to solve this (all pointing the finger at whoever's in their way to an inheritance, and a few people pointing at Agatha because she's an Outsider), and he has to clear Agatha's name in particular because she was very suspiciously absent, but he can't tell them what she was actually doing, because what she was actually doing was stealing.

So he tells everyone that Tarvek's Date is actually Gil's girlfriend and also Investigative Partner and he'd sent her ahead to scope the place out for him in case The Jewel Thief came.
