A prominent anti-LGBTQ+ activist has slammed Donald Trump for “pro-homosexual policies” ahead of an upcoming Log Cabin Republicans (LCR) event at Mar-A-Lago at which Melania Trump is a guest of honor.

Trump, it should be noted, is arguably the most anti-LGBTQ+ president of all time. A 2021 study found that LGBTQ+ people experienced a greater increase in extreme mental distress during the Trump presidency than non-LGBTQ+ people as a result of his anti-LGBTQ+ policies. Past studies have found that suicide hotline calls to Trans Lifeline quadrupled after Trump’s attacks on transgender people, trans teen suicide attempts may have spiked because of his tweets, and areas that voted for Trump experienced increased reports of school bullying. Nevertheless, Peter LaBarbera — founder and president of the anti-LGBTQ+ organization Americans for Truth About Homosexuality — believes Trump isn’t extreme enough in his anti-LGBTQ+ views and actions. LaBarbera claimed that Melania’s role at the LCR fundraiser indicates Trump is “escalating his pro-homosexual policies in advance of a possible second term.” “Far from Making America Great Again, Trump is contributing to our nation’s moral and spiritual decline,” LaBarbera said, adding that Trump should “read the Bible rather than merely sell it.”

[...] Melania will indeed be the guest of honor at an April 20 Log Cabin Republicans event at Mar-a-Lago. But according to LGBTQ Nation columnist John Gallagher, the former First Lady’s role in the event by the conservative LGBTQ+ group is a symbol of the group’s waning relevancy. “Now, in the age of Trump, LCR is little more than window dressing, an opportunity for members to content themselves in the belief that they really are part of the MAGA universe,” Gallagher wrote. “But by and large, the new LCR holds LGBTQ+ people in the same contempt that the Trump universe does. For proof, look no further than the ‘ambassador’ LCR hired last year: Isabella Riley Moody. She has openly wished for a more homophobic society, has called gay people ‘groomers,’ and said ‘Heil Hitler’ after interviewing an antisemite.”

Trump Triangulates on Homosexuality v. Abortion: AFTAH Condemns Decision to Keep Obama’s Pro-LGBT EO

CHICAGO, Jan. 31, 2017  — Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), issued the following statement on President Donald Trump’s announcement today that he will leave in place his predecessor Barack Obama’s pro-LGBT executive order for federal workers:

Last week, Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he was not going to be weighing in publicly on the issue of marriage equality any longer, saying he had learned from his mistakes when his set off a controversy over the issue back in 2012.

Cathy's new position is not sitting well with Bryan Fischer or Peter LaBarbera, who accused him of selling out the entire anti-gay movement.

"For him now to say I'm going to pull back," fumed LaBarbera, "seems to be just a complete sell out."

LaBarbera went on to lament that gay activists are playing hardball while anti-gay Christians are playing tee-ball "and we're getting wiped out and every time a leader goes silent, you know, he's hurting the cause."

"Now I'm wondering," LaBarbera added, "did Dan Cathy do more harm than good in this whole thing?"

Anti-gay activist Peter LaBarbera is outraged by the existence of Christian gay rights supporters and is afraid of a plot to "steal Christianity."

During Saturday's edition of Mission America Radio, LaBarbera told host Linda Harvey that columnist Kirsten Powers' opposition to Arizona's "right-to-discriminate" bill is proof of the warning that "there's a huge movement on the left" to "steal Christianity to make it pro-sin, pro-homosexuality."

Harvey agreed and said that people are "sick and tired" of the gay rights movement: "There is no evidence homosexuality is inborn, it's a learned desire and behavior and so we just have to keep standing on that truth and we know tons of people agree. You've had calls recently with people out of the blue are saying, 'I want to be involved,' who have never been involved before. They are sick and tired of it."

As you probably already know, right-wing commentators had a complete and utter meltdown over Coca-Cola’s “America the Beautiful” ad during the Super Bowl. Along with complaints that the ad featured eight different languages, several pundits criticized the inclusion of same-sex parents.

Peter LaBarbera of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality was among them, complaining that Coca-Cola is trying to “pander to the ‘Gay’ Lobby” in its attempt to have Americans “condition to accept sexual perversion as normal.”

This is rather awkward since evidently LaBarbera and the other anti-gay activists trashing the Coca-Cola ad might want to do some research into the author of “America the Beautiful,” Katherine Lee Bates:

The author of this iconic anthem of American patriotism was Katherine Lee Bates. In a brilliant lampoon of the backlash against the Coke commercial, Stephen Colbert pointed out that Bates was a lesbian. He could also have added that she was also a Christian socialist and an ardent foe of American imperialism.

In an interview with Alan Colmes yesterday, Americans For Truth About Homosexuality head Peter LaBarbera said that children are better off in a single parent household than with same-sex parents, whom he warned would teach children “perversion.” - 

Colmes: Let’s talk factually: we know it’s not always possible to have a two-parent household. So I’m asking you, is the child better with two parents of the same gender or a one-parent household? LaBarbera: I don’t know, I tend to think they’d be better off in a single-parent household because you’re not modeling homosexual behavior. When you have two men raising a young child, that child grows up learning dysfunction and a sexual perversion as normal. He’s learning a sexual perversion as normality.

Later in the interview, the anti-gay activist was left speechless when Colmes asked him to spell out his plan to ban homosexuality.

LaBarbera repeatedly refused to answer Colmes’ question about what he thinks the punishment for homosexual behavior should be, finally admitting: “I don’t know what the punishment should be.”

“So you want these laws on the books but you don’t know what to do about them?” Colmes asked. “You keep talking about criminalizing sodomy and using the country of Jamaica as a model for that but you’re not telling me how you would enforce it and then what the punishment should be. So you don’t have a well-rounded idea of how to approach the idea of criminalizing it.”

In Jamaica, where LaBarbera campaigned for the preservation of the country’s stringent anti-gay laws, homosexuality is punishable up to ten years in jail.
