#BSAM in Birmingham
What a fantastic evening! Together with Reynaldo Anderson, Sheree Renee Thomas and Stacey Robinson, we explored the intersectional, hyperdimensional multiplicities of AfroFuturism 2.0 through theory, writing, art and film.
The speakers gave talks regarding the imperatives of a holistic and interdisciplinary AfroFuturism in an era of environmental collapse and neo-fascist retro-futurism; about the importance of writing and naming as a means to create futurities that we can exist in; the power of AfroFuturist and AfroSurrealist art to help us reckon with Black divinity and the present need to reshape our language to evade colonial patterns of thought and practice.
We had some great conversations following the main keynotes through which we touched on questions around portrayal of black masculinities, the eternal balance between political and artistic realties (perhaps not exactly ‘truths’!) and how the Black imagination is crucial to developing innovations that will forever elude the hypercapitalist framework.
Special shoutout to David Kirkman whose short film ‘Static’ made its UK debut! Thanks to Birmingham City University and Afroflux for hosting this seminal event.
Big up #BSAMBirmingham!!! ✊🏾🔥✊🏾
