From an interview with Nobuo Uematsu, we learn he composed Aerith's theme based on a scene where she waits for Zack at the station.

In OG that scene was given to Elmyra, whose husband turned out to have died, while Tifa and Cloud also had a more successful reunion at the station, leaving Aerith and Zack's moment lost and only the theme to show it existed.
