well i think most important is being active or at least having a queue going. also, making friends on tumblr does not only make the experience wayy more fun, but it can also help getting recognized out there, even though you definitely shouldn’t make friends just for the followers!
join networks, you’ll find like-minded people who can help you out :) when reaching a certain amount of followers you can start hosting your own little (or big haha) promos to gain some more followers :)
and a great way is also posting original photos from flickr ;)
