jonghyun lives in a country where being gay is still openly seen as a sickness. yes, there are people, the number growing, who support gay rights. but most of the people in that city would lose their job, they apartment, their family's pride if they would out themselves as gay. 

he is risking a lot. you might not entirely understand, given the fact that you might say that, well, idols do a lot of fanservice, right? why would it be so shunned over if they can do that on national tv? let me tell you something. while idols give fanservice, and while the fans like it, there is the majority of the people that judge them for it. idols are, by the majority of people that are older than 30, badmouthed as gay, talked behind their back about how feminine they look. heck, we know how taemin and ren, and a lot lot more idols got beaten up, bullied, framed because they have a pretty face, because they are considered 'pretty and feminine'. now imagine how people would react to an idol officially standing in for gay rights.

let alone that idols before him have been cut from shows and whatnot because they were either associated with, or rumored to be gay. there wasn't even proof, or it wasn't even directly them.

it's not just his career that can be at stake. it's also his own pride, but most importantly, and I think that's what most koreans actually are so tuned for, the respect they get through their actions for their parents and family. we know that jonghyun's family seems pretty liberal, I would even dare to go as far as to be pretty sure that his parents are proud of him for doing this. but this doesn't man that they might not get a backleash coming from this. we know how much jonghyun loves his parents, and how he would never want anything bad to happen to them. and he still stands in for this, officially. even though his parents might be just as affected as him. and that's the really amazing part, because it's not usual for koreans to risk their family.
