I miss you
one year
Meg felt quite sad sheâd never gotten the chance to know Adele better. Theyâd hadnât been strangers anymore, of course not, theyâd even met up enough times for coffee and those meringue cookies that Meg wouldâve even considered her a friend, â but they hadnât been close enough for Meg to wonder straight away why at some point, she didnât hear from the woman anymore. Sheâd always figured Adele had found who sheâd been looking for and was now back in Boston. Or Korea, to give the bloke that surgery.
The truth, however, turned out to be a little more ugly, â unfortunately, not the kind of ugly plastic surgery could fix either.
Despite the fact that theyâd only ever had the kind of friendship that never really ran deeper than the occasional coffee and some gossiping, â Adele had been easy and fun to hang out with and that was something Meg had sorely needed â Meg knew that if sheâd tried harder, they couldâve actually become quite good friends. At least, she wouldâve hoped so. Now it was too late to find out, though, and while people had told her it wasnât really something she couldâve foreseen happening and nothing to really feel guilty about, it was still there.
Enough that it made her go visit the place where she was buried. The site was perfectly tended to, simple and beautiful and whoever mustâve arranged it mustâve cared about the woman a lot. Her mother, perhaps. That one friend she always used to mention, âtoo stoic for his own good sometimes.â
"I know you wouldâve rolled your eyes so hard at your own luck," Meg muttered, shaking her head a little. "Shouldâve knocked wood when we talked about the evil brother, right?" Her mouth twisted down, soft sigh leaving her lips as she leaned down and placed some white roses on her grave. "Wouldâve made them out of meringue, but I didnât want birds to come and make a mess of your resting place."
Briefly laying her hand on top of the stone, warmed by the sun, Meg let her eyes take in the name. The dates. Adele had been her age⌠it was scary to contemplate how quick it could go. âIâll come back. Someone needs to update you on all the shite going on, right?â Megâs lips quirked slightly, as she patted the stone.

"âŚI mean, heâs been handling this case for years trying to figure out who this âghostâ was, right, and then it turns out Tristan was the one whoâd sabotaged it, can you believe that?â Meg fingers tended lightly to the flowers standing on top of the grave, put there by someone who hadnât been her, removing the wilting leaves and rearranging them a little so her own roses could be put there as well. âPlus, turns out I was actually friends with the âghostâ too, so I had the answer all along, I just didnât know it because Landon never discussed his case with me.â Meg shook her head. âMy lifeâs starting to reach soap opera levels as well. I bet you wouldâve laughed at me if I told you. We couldâve probably started a sitcom together.â
Meg was quiet for a while, before softly admitting, âIâm actually glad I didnât know. Iâve already been keeping secrets from him, I didnât need this to be another one. Does that make me selfish?âÂ
There was no reply, but Meg hadnât really expected one. It was easy to simply talk as if Adele was there to listen, like she used to do back in the day. The only difference was that the stone never talked back; perhaps that was the point. She never wouldâve told Adele these things if the woman had still been alive. Hell, perhaps they wouldnât have even been in contact anymore after all these years, â but Meg had kept good on her promise and had come back none the less. âListen, I have to go⌠I wonât be coming back for a while, I think. Landon resigned after this entire fiasco and weâre⌠well, Iâm moving to California with him. There isnât that much left here for me.â
Standing up straight, she patted the stone, like she always did. âOne day, though. Bet Iâll have more to tell you than ever before. Better brace yourself.â
ten years
It took five years, but Meg did eventually return, and entire bunch of white roses gathered in her arms, for every year that she hadnât been able to make it. âAt least this time I can give you good news,â She announced upon putting them down and arranging them nicely. With a small grin, she held up her hand, showing off the wedding band. âI got married.â
Cas had been there and Evie and Roman, Lux and Anna, Emrys, Xander (though sheâd asked him not to bring Ashley, knowing her connection to Spencer and thus, Tristan, â for Landonâs sake, more than hers).Â
"Best day of my life, â well, not counting the one in Vegas I canât seem to recall â though Iâm sure you wouldâve had a few things to say about what my brother was wearing that day." Trust Roman to show up in a glittery suit; or the jacket of the suit at least, almost pinning all the attention on him instead of Meg and Landon. Luxâd pulled a face at her, apologetic and bashful at the same time, but Megâd only laughed at that point, too happy to give a shit. "I never asked what your stance on glitter was, though. Perhaps you wouldâve liked itâŚ"Â
Meg scratched the side of her face, sucking in her bottom lip. âI canât stay for long, unfortunately. But Iâll come back and give you the mega-update, donât worry. Besides, I think thereâs someone else waiting to visit,â She peered at her left, noticing the slender, black-haired man with Korean features hovering not too far away. âYour stoic friend?âÂ
Still no reply, save for the twittering of a bird in the tree above her. Meg smiled a little, reaching out to pat the stone.Â
