    In this post, unlike the passive house we introduced, I would like to introduce an active house that utilizes external energy such as wind and solar light.

    Active House is a sustainable home that produces more energy on its own than it consumes. That means to take advantage of natural energy. It's called the Active Solar House because it's mainly solar-heated. Usually, solar cells or reflectors are installed on the roof to store solar heat as energy and then use it for heating or hot water systems. The building is self-sufficient in energy. It is meaningful as an eco-friendly building because it does not cause environmental pollution after using it like fossil fuels.

    In fact, you can also see active houses in Seoul. As you can see in the picture, it is currently being constructed in Nowon-gu, Seoul. The Meaning of Energy Zero Housing 'E(energy)Z(zero) House' is an energy-independent house. In the case of this house, the excess energy generated by renewable energy technologies such as solar panels and geothermal heat pumps is 7% so that residents can perform basic residential activities without using fossil fuels.

    This building has many advantages, but instead of using fossil fuels, the 'Active House' has more than twice the amount of building materials in its construction process and requires a lot of money for mechanical installation such as solar cells. It's a good building technology for the environment, but it still seems to have financial limitations to be commercialized. Still, as the amount of fossil fuel is expected to decrease, it is expected to become a major architectural form, so I think it is something to consider when building a house.

Sunlighthouse Austria 2010. Austria’s first carbon-neutral single-family house. Nestled in a wooded, mountainous region, the home’s sloping roof and other exciting architectural elements take full advantage of the sun to ensure maximum daylight and solar energy. The house is a part of Danish company VELUX Group's project "Model Home 2020" - a vision for climate-neutral buildings with a high level of livability. It is part of the VELUX strategy to take an active part in developing sustainable buildings – the buildings of the future. The vision and principles behind Model Home 2020 needed to be developed and tested; so from 2009 to 2011, VELUX built six full-scale experimental demo-houses which have been placed at six different locations in five countries. Sunlighthouse is one of the six full-scale houses.

The home’s design was the result of a competition between nine up-and-coming Austrian architects, and the winner was Hein-Troy Architekten. VELUX Austria is monitoring the project along with our partners at Danube University Krems and the Institute for Healthy and Ecological Building (IBO). Sunlighthouse is the recipient of the Austrian State Prize for Environment and Energy Technologies. 

The Model Home 2020 experiments comply with the Active House principles where the three main principles of energy, indoor climate and environment are actively integrated in the design of buildings. This Active House radar shows how all parameters within each principle are balanced against each other, enabling the holistic approach and overview to sustainable buildings. It also shows that the Active House parameters depend on active choices within each parameter.
