the  air  on  set  was  thick  with  the  usual  pre-shoot  energy—crew  members  darting  around  with  last-minute  adjustments,  the  low  hum  of  conversations  mixing  with the  occasional  sharp  call  for  quiet.  eden  had  been  through  this  a  million  times,  but  that  first  day  always  had  a  particular  charge  to  it,  like  stepping  onto  a  tightrope  over  a  city  street.

she  stood  near  the  monitors,  dressed  in  full  costume  but  still  wrapped  in  her  own  leather  jacket,  coffee  cup  balanced  in  one  hand,  script  in  the  other.  she  wasn’t  reading  it—just  holding  it,  fingers  pressing  idly  against  the  pages.  she  already  knew  her  lines.  muscle  memory. but  knowing  the  words  and  making  them  mean  something  were  two  different  things.

with  a  quiet  sigh,  she  glanced  toward  the  set,  where  the  finishing  touches  were  being  placed  on  the  first  scene  of  the  day.  another  movie.  another  role.  another  version  of  herself  that  the  world  would  get  to  pick  apart.

her  lips  curled  slightly,  more  to  herself  than  anything,  before  she  turned  her  head  slightly,  catching  sight  of  whoever  had  just  stepped  up  beside  her.

“so,”  she  mused,  voice  easy  but  laced  with  the  kind  of amusement  that  meant  she  was  watching,  really  watching.  “are  we  betting  on  how  many  takes  this  scene’s  gonna  take,  or  are  we  pretending  we’re  all  professionals  and  it’ll  go  smoothly  on  the  first  run?”

crystal wine glass in hand, dark eyes scanned the living room, her l gaze searching for anyone she hadn’t greeted yet. many of the faces she knew — old friends, former co-stars, but there was a handful that she hadn’t had the opportunity to formally meet in the past.

“on a scale of one to ten, how ready are you for shooting to start?” the actress questioned, focus turning to the person by her side at her rental home’s bar. “fingers crossed everything goes smoothly. there’s nothing worse than set drama… i don’t have time for all that nonsense these days.”
