It seems every generation has at least one cause that demands attention by its very seriousness and because the cause is just. This quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. occurred during the civil rights movement and while that cause was still in need of action along came the Vietnam War. Both of these issues Dr. King became a leading voice for, in the case of civil rights and against, in the case of the war in Vietnam. I have always been a person who spoke out for Social Justice. Early on it was the environment which, sadly,, is still a serious issue. Then it was civil rights and anti-apartheid in South Africa. Then an issue came knocking on my own door; calling me to action. That issue was the HIV/AIDS Epidemic which was already serious when I came out as a member of the LGBTQ Community. Soon I was working on behalf of People With AIDS. Along the way I also became close friends with many people who were infected with HIV and/or were diagnosed with AIDS. I felt the need for an outlet to all the frustration I had about friends getting sick and dying. That’s when I found ACT-UP and realized the gravity of Dr. King’s quote and the ACT-UP slogan “Silence=Death. I participated in ACT-UP “actions” and created a few of my own. Later many added to the slogan which became “Silence=Death but Action=Life. So lend your voice to a cause or causes you care deeply about. Together we CAN make a difference.
