The National AIDS Memorial Grove @nationalaidsmemorial es un espacio dedicado a quienes han sido tocados directa o indirectamente por el SIDA. The Grove está ubicado en el Golden Gate Park de San Francisco. Es un lugar para recordar, para sanar y para reunirse junto a la historia de millones de vidas que se han visto afectadas por la epidemia. . . Gene Anthony Ray (May 24, 1962 – November 14, 2003) was an actor, dancer, and choreographer, who died from complications of a stroke in New York. He was 41 years old and HIV positive. . Born in Harlem, New York, Ray began performing at street dancing at block parties and attended the New York High School of the Performing Arts, the inspiration for the film Fame. He skipped school one day to audition for Fame choreographer, Louis Falco (1942 – 1993) and won the part of Leroy Johnson. Ray also starred in television series based on the film from 1982 to 1987. . In 1984, it was reported Ray was axed from Fame after his mother was jailed for allegedly running a drug ring, and he consistently failed to turn up for work. Ray struggled throughout his life with alcohol and drug addiction, and only worked occasionally once the series ended. In 1996 he was diagnosed HIV positive. . Ray's post-Fame credits include the role of Man Friday in the television mini-series Shipwreck alongside Michael York, a small appearance in Out of Sync (1985) a film co-produced by Fame co-star @therealdebbieallen and a cameo in the @WhoopiGoldberg movie Eddie (1996). . . David Spada (December 5, 1961 – May 13, 1996) was a jewellery designer who died of AIDS in New York City. He was 34 years old. . Spade, born in New Britain, had a twin brother. He grew up in Berlin, where he was active in the Berlin Summer Youth Theater. In the 1980’s, he attended @parsonsschoolofdesign where he later taught jewellery design. . Based in NYC in the 1980s and 90s, Spada was the inventor of the Freedom Rings and part of the Lower East Side scene where his friends included #KeithHaring (1958 – 1990), @theladymisskier, @official_lady_bunny and #SalvadorDalí’s (1904 - 1989) protégé #InternationalChrysis (1951 – 1990). . Spada’s clients included @Madonna, #NinaHagen and @gracejonesofficial, who performed in his apparel highlighted by body paint applied by Haring. His work also featured in @voguemagazine, @elleusa and @harpersbazaarus. Just before his death, Spada’s “Absolut Spada'' design was used nationally for an @absolutvodka_us campaign. . However, it was ‘The March on Washington’ a large political rally held on April 25, 1993, that brought Spada to prominence when his Freedom Rings sold out. . . #CraigGadson (January 15, 1961 - May 19, 1996) was an extraordinary man, friend and Make-up Artist. . Craig fought the disease and the stigma with an elegance and courage that still amazes me. When I asked Craig why he wanted to continue with drug trials and drug cocktails that would clearly never benefit him or extend his life, he said it was for the future, it was for my children and my children's children. . I knew Craig was tired. I just couldn't imagine a world without him so I raged at anyone in my path at St.Vincent's Hospital that May night. Craig just laughed at me and then in his deep voice told me to ". . . take an Ativan if you have to, find some Chardonnay but get it together and fluff up girl!!!" . Hours before his death, Craig made his mom and me promise to wear white to his funeral and, he asked me to do his make up because he didn't trust anyone else to make sure his foundation was a flawless cocoa brown. . Craig refused to die in front of us but we couldn't bear to leave so we took turns getting him water and fluffing his pillows. Finally he said you have to go so I can go. His mom and I kissed him a thousand times and then we went home. . 10 days later, I was in the funeral home with the make up kit Craig used on countless jobs, painting his face . . .
