Cooper’s Hawk (Accipiter cooperii)
September 16, 2022
Southeastern Pennsylvania
Had a request for some merch with this absolutely goofy Cooper’s Hawk. Raptors are truly dorks sometimes. Looks like Society6 is doing a year end sale so now is a good time to check it out if you like stickers, coffee mugs, pillows, tote bags - or whatever, haha.

Eagles
From Above: Steller’s Sea Eagle, Golden Eagle, Harpy Eagle, African Crowned Eagle, Bald Eagle, Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle
My soon-to-be new bird, Azazel (aka Reckless) the coopers hawk :)
He’s currently molting with the falconer who raised him, but as soon as he finishes, I’ll be taking him home. He is a hand-fed and tame-hacked imprint, just like Kai, so I’ll be training using the same techniques. I can’t wait to see how he compares. It’s like Kai 2.0! He’s never been hunted, so it will be my job to introduce him to game and show him the ropes. I’m hoping to get him on quail. I can’t wait to meet him, but I’m also a little nervous because coops are like goshawks, but even faster and crazier! I’ll definitely have my work cut out for me
Rule #1, ALWAYS have your camera on you. Yesterday, while walking along the seawall downtown in the light rain, I came across this Cooper’s hawk (you better not tell me this is a sharp-shinned bc i’ll fight you over it) sitting just above eye level in a community garden. This is the first time I’ve ever been able to get a decent photo of any accipiter and I’m super pleased with myself
