Abuto 95% of his screentime:
Abuto calling Kamui big bro here makes me think he's calling him out over never telling him he had a sister. Like a "Huh Ig we're not as close as we thought", and makes more sense he really believes Kamui was gonna kill him here and is so confused when he carries him, which hurts to see Abuto doubt Kamui was going to dispose of him and he was ready to accept it. Abuto, dont be so ready to die for others!! Youre life has value, and Kamui proved it here, even if he hides his care over the veil of needing him for practical reasons, the sentimentality is there even if either are willing to admit it atp. These visuals speak for themselves, tho, the sun being fully visible only when Kamui says he needs Abuto alive its perfect symbolism that he sees the guy as his only light in his life. These two are just fake idgafers, I see you, Abuto, hiding that you were holding back and why! And Kamui takes him at his word because it's better to pretend they're not friends. The subtext in this dynamic is so peak. Kamui voicing outloud that Gintoki possesses a different type of strength, and it's a valid kind as it allowed him to defeat Hosen. It's so interesting, like he can see it but just not for himself. Abuto took notice of it. Maybe seeing it as a small sign there could be hope for Kamui, but it won't be easy.
OUGH 💔 hes so blind rn not able to see the sun. He's trying to run from the pain of carrying the burden, but he doesn't realize he's doing it, and it's not so heavy ahhhhh
Shinpachi was able to keep his promise and protect her because it was never about doing it physically here, but to protect the soul of Yorozuya Kagura means so much to me. He won't let this define Kagura. She's not a monster, but the girl who hangs out with him every day, who he can't stand but love all the same. It's not to protect Abuto, but because he knows this would destroy Kagura if she came back from this and realized she killed someone, the absolute worst outcome for someone like her. That said, he does inadvertently save Abuto, not just from Kagura but its because of seeing Shinpachi put himself in great danger stopping her for the sake of Kagura that it plants the idea in his head he can do it too and its the courage he needs to act like he does in Rakuyo. "If those kids can do it, maybe I can save my dumb commander from himself"
More of Abuto in denial, trying so hard to believe that he's fightinf without holding back even after she went berserk mode, like theres no point in saying hes serious when she cant process it unless its just for himself. Then he goes and accepts that yeah, it may not be for the reasons she did, but he still couldn't go through with it because of a strong bond with someone else. He's not as empty hearted or business focused if the opponent having the same face as Kamui is enough to not have him be able to be as ruthless as he usually would be. He got caught up trying to prove a point for validation of his own existence as he is, but instead, he was forced to admit he was being a hypocrite. Still, he's so hung up on the yato being doomed as a race, including him, that he's willing to die clinging to that belief. If he's wrong, then what has he been doing all this time? He could've changed all this time, but he couldn't? That would make him feel like a failure and destroy what he sees as such a big part of his identity, he cant think that even in his last moments. That's how scary it is to confront his own weakness, to break his own cage

Abuto acknowledges later that he was being a hypocrite since he hesitated to kill her due to looking like a comrade. This is still genuine thoughts of his that were most likely drilled into him when he was young and joined the harusame. Its also a way to convince himself that this is how things must be, because he believes its too late for him and its such an integral part of his identity by now, this fight is him trying to reaffirm this to himself. Specially since it's relevant to his dynamic with Kamui. He does not agree with how he goes about things but is still going along with jt because he cares but also because he can't find it in him to change. Lowkey Abuto might be a Tsukuyo parallel. He's fighting within his own cage but still can't think of breaking it. Since this is a clash of ideals, this part of the fight does make it seem like Abuto is kinda right since Kagura isn't strong enough to back up what she believes in without succumbing to her blood
I just love their dynamic so much. Kamui asks Abuto if he's mad because he cares about his opinion but covers it up by dismissing it and telling him to move on. Abuto noticing Kamui let Seita go, while Kamui most definitely wanted him to do that since he wants him to see his mom. Surely, Abuto must be reminded of how Kamui felt about his own mom and why he joined the harusame here but doesn't say anything because he doesn't feel it's his place. Then Kamui says he'll just kill the higher ups if they go against him, it might seem like he feels free because of how far he goes for his goals, but its a way for him distract himself from what he must face. Also, Abuto sounds sarcastic when he makes the pirate king comment, but by the end, his actions feel genuine. He's resigned to do what he must to make sure Kamui reaches his goal Lastly, Abuto also is going this out of a misguided responsibility to Housen as his old boss, and also fear of the consequences that may befall Kamui if he doesn't go to remedy his commanders blunder. Kamui doesn't see it as important but still doesn't tell Abuto not to do it.
Just such a good scene showing the familiarity of these two and how well they get each other, while also still keeping a sense of distance.
