Not far from the coastal city of Pescara in Abruzzo is a beautiful village called Penne. Spread out over a few hilltops, the pretty cobbled streets and exposed brick buildings – similar to what you would find the neighbouring Le Marche region – give Penne its old world charm. From the monumental gate marking the entrance to the village at the bottom, to the churches of various styles scattered around, not to mention the occasional glimpses of the glorious Gran Sasso mountain, there are plenty of reasons why Penne should feature on any visitor's itinerary of Abruzzo. An added bonus is that it is not overrun with tourists, leaving a lovely experience for you to discover the pretty piazzas and Renaissance-era palaces.
