Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Taken on 01/11/2020. Spread over a curving ridge is an appealing provincial city called Chieti. From the top of the historic centre you can take in breathtaking views of the Majella and Gran Sasso mountains as well as out to sea, though today wasn't meant to be for me. Still, I enjoyed being back in Chieti after four years. I remembered how iconic the chunky the Cathedral, known as the 'Duomo di San Giustino', was with its bell tower that's enriched by small arches and ovoids in brick with tiled mounds—an architectural feature that is quite common in Abruzzo. The Cathedral is a much-reconstructed masterpiece that has some fine frescoes in its ancient crypt. Churches are aplenty in Chieti, which, although a city in name, feels more like a small sleepy town. But this often overlooked yet appealing place is home to a superb archeological museum that I would've visited—had it not been closed. Known as the 'Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Abruzzo', it holds finds from Abruzzo’s major sites: a massive and muscular white-marble Hercules from his temple at Alba Fucens as well as a miniature bronze statue of him, one of several Roman copies of the Greek original by Lysippus. Most interesting and probably the most photographed is the Capestrano Warrior, a statue of a Bronze Age warrior-prince with strangely feminine hips and thighs. And then there are the remains of three little Roman temples as well as those of an amphitheatre to explore in Chieti. Don't give it a miss! 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: Chieti is best reached by bus from outside Pescara Central station or Chieti Scalo station.
