Readers (me included obv) were surprised at the Kathy's show when Neil stood up for Kevin. Neil was supposed to be selfish and should've kept his mouth shut if he wanted to stay alive. Survival was all his mother had drilled into him. But what if what he had rlly learnt from his mother was protection? All Mary ever did, all she had ever done was for Neil; to protect him bcs she loved him. She had risked everything for him and then had died for him. So no, it shouldn't have been surprising when all Neil did was put himself in harms path for the ppl he was coming to love, to martyr himself and put them first.
