A preacher will excel (only) in proportion to his acquaintance with the Holy Scriptures.

Divine grace disdains to be assisted in the performance of that work which peculiarly belongs to itself, by the poor, imperfect performances of men. Attempts to complete what grace begins, betray our pride and offend the Lord; but cannot promote spiritual interest. Let the reader, therefore, carefully remember, that grace is either absolutely free, or it is not at all: and, that he who professes to look for salvation by grace, either believes in his heart to be saved entirely by it, or he acts inconsistently in affairs of the greatest importance.

Many reflections are cast on the Baptists, the various charges are laid against them; reflections and charges of such a kind, as greatly impeach the truth of their doctrinal principles, and the candor of their Christian temper. They are frequently represented by their Paedobaptist brethren, as uncharitably rigid, as incorrigible bigots to a favorite opinion, and as putting baptism in the place of our Lord's atoning blood and the sanctifying agency of the divine Spirit....But why such unfriendly surmises and bold accusations? What is there in our principles or conduct that lays a foundation for such hard suspicions and such severity censure? As to making baptism a substitute for the atonement of Jesus Christ, and the sanctifying agency of the Holy Spirit, it is manifestly contrary to our avowed sentiments...
