Growing up in Santa Barbara things had been great for Scott. He had an amazing childhood with loving parents who made sure their children never wanted for anything, a younger sister who, although they often bickered, Scott adored and would do absolutely anything for. He was popular, got good grades, was captain of the baseball team, and had a boyfriend he cherished. He and Brant Henderson had been best friends for years, practically inseparable, but somewhere along the way Scott had developed feelings for his best friend, feelings he was relieved to learn Brant shared when Brant kissed him in the locker room after a game. Scott loved Brant with his whole heart and they were extremely fortunate to have their relationship accepted not only by all of their peers, becoming their schools unofficial it-couple, but also by both their families. Scott’s family had already welcomed Brant but they saw how happy he made Scott and the unique ability Brant had to calm Scott down in ways no one else could.  

Scott had managed to earn a full-ride scholarship to college for baseball. He was excited to go away to Vanderbilt in the fall. While he loved the town he had grown up in and all the memories he had created there and was sad to be leaving it and the people he loved behind, he knew it was for the benefit of his future. He and Brant had planned how they would make their relationship work, determined not to let the distance between them get in the way of what they had built together. Scott was anxiously anticipating the endless possibilities that lie ahead. And then it happened.

Scott and his dad had been away on one last father son camping trip the week before Scott was due to leave for Vanderbilt when they got the news that a raging wildfire was rapidly approaching Santa Barbara. On their way back to pick up Sophia and their mother and evacuate they thought they had plenty of time so Scott insisted they stop to make sure Brant was safe. He couldn’t rest until he ensured the man he loved had evacuated safely. Unfortunately, the fire had arrived much faster than expected and by the time they arrived home it was too late for their mom. Their house had caught fire and while Sophia had managed to make it out, their mom hadn’t been so lucky, the ceiling had fallen in and trapped her inside. Their home and the perfect childhood Scott had known had gone up in smoke. They had lost everything.

Their dad assured him it wasn’t his fault their mom had died but Scott couldn’t help but blame himself. If he hadn’t asked for one last camping trip and then made them go out of their way to check on Brant she might still be alive. Scott retreated into his grief and guilt and pushed the man he loved away. He didn’t deserve happiness and Brant deserved so much better than him anyways.

When rebuilding their lives in Santa Barbara proved to be too painful with the loss of their beloved mother the Holmes family moved to Cypress Cove and tried to start over there. Scott put off going to college and stuck around to help his family. Without their mother around, their father became despondent and Scott knew he would have to work to keep their family afloat and make sure Sophia could still go to college like she dreamed. So, he took a job as a receptionist at The Foundry before eventually became a personal trainer there. Scott knew that his dreams had burned away with the wildfire but he would be damned if Sophia didn’t get to achieve hers. He became extremely protective of her doing everything he could to ensure she got to live the life he never did. Sometimes Scott longed for that life and the promise he had to leave behind and he often yearned for Brant and the love they once shared. He frequently thought about reaching out to the man but he felt like he deserved this new life as punishment. It was his fault their mom passed after all. Besides, Brant was an absolute catch, he had no doubt the man had moved on and forgotten all about him by now.

Scott carried his guilt of what happened deep within himself, causing him to close off from most of the world. He didn’t dare let anyone new get too close, feeling as though all it would do would cause the other person pain. Instead he buried himself in his work finding it the one thing he had going for him that made him feel even remotely close to the life he once had. One that had once been filled with joy, love, and a bright future.

And then one day Brant walked back into his life and sparked something in Scott that had long laid dormant. Even though Scott had pushed the man away he had never stopped thinking about him, never stopped hoping that one day he might be reunited with the only man he had ever loved. Luckily for him it turned out Brant felt the same way. Scott had been surprised to see him there in Cypress Cove but it turned out that Sophia had stayed in touch and encouraged Brant to come out and try and rekindle the connection the pair had once shared. For the first time since moving there, Cypress Cove finally began to feel like home. Brant even encouraged Scott to apply for the open varsity baseball coach position, reawakening another passion of his.
