With Your Crooked Heart, a comic I drew for Pride 2023

Society often takes moments of queer lightness and joy and undermines them with sudden terror. This was my attempt to reach for something different. I don't usually do much with autobiography, so this is a stretch for me.

The title is a reference to the end of one of my favorite poems, As I Walked Out One Evening by W. H. Auden.

3. rant. just do it

I'm so sick and tired of this productive, push, push produce more! world. It leads to burn out and apathy and anger. The need to push through it, keep going and feel something pushes people towards this way of life that isn't fucking sustainable. We expect it in every aspect of life. You did a thing? Cool, that's the past, I'm a baby and I don't know you did shit, show me something new and shiny! I'm tired of art and history having to prove it's fucking worth. "Well I don't like it" - well not everything made in this enormous world is for you Karen. Don't look and move on. Or accept that. The time, thought and effort that went into something is worth more than you can pay? Doesn't make the art shit. It means we as humans and the things we make have value, be it art, tech, literature, history, whatever. Not liking it or being able to afford interacting with it doesn't make it unworthy or useless.

29. what quote or inspirational setting do you think is bs?

"forgive and forget" nah. accept and move on. if it helps you, that's great. But someone shows you who they are, forgive and forget is a welcome mat.

33. what do you think about a lot

What don't I think about a lot is a shorter question, lol.

My cat. Antisemitism. History. My friends & family. Whether my loved ones would be proud of me. If I'm doing enough. How can I somehow do more? Smut. Clothing. Costumes. Outfit planning. Where'd I leave that thing? OH GIF SET IDEA.

Because my answers were kinda...well they're bummers. Have a LGBTQ+ Pride Jewish Bagel.

Coffee shop or Florist? I actually haven’t read much of either! But Florist, I guess (especially if it comes with a side of Hanahaki).

AU or Fix-it? I feel like this would’ve been a no-brainer for the Courtney of a few years and fandoms ago. I mean, have you met me? Fix-it fic used to be my specialty. Once upon a time, I didn’t even like AUs. Then I started reading all these brilliant fics from Magicians fandom, and that was all she wrote. So I’ll qualify my answer this way: my very favorite flavor of Fix-it is the almighty Canon Divergence AU (see @sparklepocalypse and @orchidscript’s utterly gorgeous The Drum Beats Out of Time).

Enemies to lovers or Childhood friends? I mean… I don’t see why both of these couldn’t be true. Like, in the same fic. That’s just delicious.

Angst or Fluff? Obviously. (But it can be fluffy at the end! Or at least… fluffier.)

Love at first sight or Pining? Unless, hear me out… love at first sight kicks off the pining. I see you, Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor.

Modern AU or Historical AU? No contest. Give me a clever/unique modern AU all day (especially if it’s a gut punch, like @strandnreyes’ to live for the hope of it all). Magical realism is always a bonus (like @anincompletelist’s brilliant l’echappatoire). But my go-to, god-tier AU? Lim’s Knaveverse, of course.

Break up and make up or Proposal and wedding? *Shelby twang* Angst with a Happy Ending is my signature tag.

Get together or Established relationship? I need the journey.

Soulmates or Unrequited? My one true love. Especially if there’s an interesting twist in the lore. (For true greatness in this arena, look no further than @cha-melodius.)

Fake dating or Secret dating? But if I had to have a side chick…

Obvious pining or Domestic fluff? As long as the object of said pining is oblivious, this is what I’m here for (even better if it’s mutual)! Though, again, there’s an obvious combo package here: ah, the beauty of And They Were Roommates.

Hurt/comfort or Crack? That said, I’m a sucker for crack played just a little straight. Case in point: the infamous Ilya WAG fic is one of the most delightful things I’ve ever read.
