Stephen: Thinking about his mum, and how sensitive and witty she used to be, and how confused and unhappy she is now, with her dementia and the pain of her arthritis. Stephen gets seriously upset about it every time he goes to visit her, and if he dwells on it too long or it hits him hard on a low day, it could certainly make him cry.

He’s a tactile bloke, for how solitary he is, so Huck wanting to be petted would be a good help. Plus support from his friends, and a cup of tea.

Huck is very tuned into Stephen’s emotions and would be desperate to make Stephen feel better.

Huck: A lot of things make Huck sad, but sad enough to cry all day... I think being unwanted or abandoned is highest on that list. They’re terrified of it. They’ve had it drilled into them since day 1 that they only have worth when they’re useful and wanted so even a suggestion of being unwanted puts them into a mental tailspin :S

Unfortunately, Huck has never been taught or encouraged to find ways to comfort themself, other than the natural ways they do it, like curling up somewhere small and dark, where they feel safe. They’d seek external comfort, from Stephen reassuring them they were wanted.

Stephen may or may not pick up on Huck’s distress, depending on how well they’re hiding it; they can be quite closed off at times, because they’ve been taught that showing emotion is weak. But once he did know, he would do all he could to support and comfort Huck :)
