AAC&U is pleased to announce the latest in a series of webinars that highlight the work being done at colleges and universities to address challenges and identify best practices for enhancing the teaching and learning experience and demonstrating the value of liberal education for work, life, and global citizenship. Advancing and institutionalizing diversity and inclusivity involves working at multiple levels, from individual faculty to departments to the entire institution. However, bridging these levels can be difficult. While catalysts for change can emerge from any of the levels, lasting change requires careful thought about ways to strategically expand impact by crossing into the other levels of the system.

This webinar builds on Kathy Takayama, Matthew Kaplan, and Alison Cook-Sather’s article in Liberal Education, “Advancing Diversity and Inclusion through Strategic Multilevel Leadership,” to articulate the strategies and processes that are needed to synergistically coordinate university-wide leadership efforts, interactions and initiatives at the school/college or department level, and efforts by individual instructors and activists to create change in their own classrooms or more broadly at their institutions.

AACU’s Challenging the Normalization of Hate: Strategies for Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation, Webinar Feb 18, 2020

How can Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) inform strategies to address the increasing normalization of hate within our communities? Given the power of the internet and social media for spreading white supremacist thought, Jessie Daniels, the author of Cyber Racism, will share strategies for countering the spread of racist ideology. Panelists from three TRHT Campus Centers—Jermaine Pearson (Brown University), Charmaine DM Royal (Duke University), and J. Goosby Smith (The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina)—will also discuss how the TRHT Framework can bring about radical change, through storytelling, active listening, and community-engaged work.

AAC&U “Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Campus Centers: Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders to Confront Racism” Webinar, March 6, 2019

An increasing aversion to difference and the growing number of racial incidents have left colleges and universities with the challenge of how to affect change and to heal from the legacies and harms of racism. This webinar will discuss the efforts of the first ten Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Campus Centers in addressing the historical and contemporary effects of racism to bring about transformative and sustainable change for our students, in our communities, and across our country.

Representatives from the TRHT Campus Centers at Austin Community College, Hamline University, Rutgers University–Newark, and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will share how they are implementing specific strategies to achieve the goals of the TRHT effort on their campuses and in their local communities through authentic partnerships, understanding the narrative on race at their respective campuses, racial healing circles, and professional development.

AAC&U is hosting the second TRHT Campus Centers Summer Institute at Villanova University from June 25 to 28 for campus teams interested in learning about the TRHT Framework and the process for hosting a TRHT Campus Center. The deadline for teams to apply for the institute is March 14, 2019.  

AAC&U “A Vision for Equity: Campus-Based Strategies for Committing to Equity and Inclusive Excellence” Webinar, April 19, 2018

This webinar will present findings from a three-year project on Committing to Equity and Inclusive Excellence led by AAC&U in partnership with the Center for Urban Education at the University of Southern California. The webinar will highlight AAC&U’s national project report, A Vision for Equity, which shares lessons learned about addressing equity gaps at thirteen participating campuses.

The webinar will feature presentations from four campus teams on evidence-based interventions focused on improving student success that include practical examples, models, and resources for identifying and addressing disparities in student outcomes. This webinar is designed for all educators, faculty members, and administrators interested in learning more about campus-based strategies for committing to equity and inclusive excellence.

Participants will gain insights and knowledge from project teams and partners on how to implement targeted student interventions, improve curricular designs and student pathways, enhance academic support programs, strengthen high-impact practices, leverage resources, create institutional tracking models, and design professional development training for faculty and staff.
