A Meeting of the Minds...
Rick Sanchez stumbled in2 the bar and took a seat at the counter. "Give me your strongest alcohol," he grumbled 2 the bartender.
The bartender raised his eyebrows in concern. "Are you sure, Rick? This is your fifth night in a row."
"Did I stutter?" Rick said (without a stutter).
The bartender shrugged. "The customer's always right," he said and poured Rick the bar's most alcoholic alcohol.
Rick drank it all in one gulp and slid the empty glass back across the counter. The bartender filled it up. Rick took a sip and sighed. "Is this world even worth living in anymore?" he asked.
"Tell me about it," came a voice to his left. Rick turned and saw a boy with bleach-white skin and jet-black hair. His face was covered in burn scars. There was something enigmatic about his presence, something that intrigued Rick.
"Aren't you a little young 2 be here?" Rick quipped.
The boy raised an eyebrow. "Young? Maybe in years, but I've lived a thousand lifetimes."
"Amen," Rick said. He waved the bartender over. "Hey bartender, a drink of your strongest alcohol for this young man right here. On me."
The bartender obliged, and the boy drank his liquor.
"What'd you say your name was?" Rick Sanchez asked.
"Jeff," the boy said wistfully. "Jeff the Killer."
Youâre 16, and in some form of nihilistic self importance, you just laughed in the face of a high school bully. She threatens to knock you out if you donât stop. You just watched a Doctor Who in which Clara Oswald says âthreats only work if you deliverâ so you tell her to hit you. She doesnât. You feel big. You feel powerful. You tell her to enjoy high school because no adult will tolerate her abuse and she has reached her lifeâs peak in year 11. She hits you hard. But it was worth it. Your classmates are watching, and you hug the one she scared. Later, your mum will receive a message from that classmateâs mum saying she wonât stop talking about you. You will chase this high for the rest of your life but in the end, you also peaked in year 11.
A man travelling across a field encountered a tiger. He fled, the tiger after him. Coming to a precipice, he caught hold of the root of a wild vine and swung himself down over the edge. The tiger sniffed at him from above. Trembling, the man looked down to where, far below, another tiger was waiting to eat him. Only the vine sustained him. Two mice, one white and one black, little by little started to gnaw away the vine. The man saw a luscious strawberry near him. Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. How sweet it tasted!

win: a parable
âBut Iâve done everything right,â the hero protested. âWhy canât I win?âÂ
âBecause,â said the sage of the forest with the white-lidded eyes, taking a drag from its slender pipe. âBecause what?â âBecause someone before you has done everything wrong.âÂ
âThen Iâll fix it. Iâll fix what they did wrong. Iâll do it right.â âOf course you will, and you wonât win.â âHow is that?â âYou canât compete with a tragedy,â the sage shrugged, and let its gaze slide into the distance as the hero considered, taking another drag and easing the smoke out slowly, watching it mingle with the forest mist. âSo thatâs how you do it, then.â
âHmm?â The sage looked back. âThatâs how you win.â The hero spoke now with a cold resolve. âIâll make a tragedy. I donât care about being good. Iâll do everything wrong.â
âOf course you will,â said the sage, blinking its heavy lids. âAnd you wonât win.â âWhy?â The hero snapped, grabbed the sage by its scrawny neck. âThis villain, what makes you think their tragedy more potent than the one Iâll make? How did they do it? Tell me! How did they win?â
âWin?â croaked the sage, hardly sounding very alarmed. "Who said anything about winning?â âYou did!â The villain threw the creature back, spat in its face. "You said I canât compete with a tragedy! You said they did everything wrong! Thatâs how they won.â âBut they didnât.â âWell who did then? A ghost? Tell me!â
The sage coughed, wiping the spittle from its face to fix its assailant with an icy glare. âThe tragedy,â it said, straightening its robes, and vanished into a tail of mist. âThe tragedy.â
Elio Italian form of AELIUS or HELIOS, the Sun God. Elio is the Sun. He is the much-needed bright spot in Oliverâs life.
Oliver In English the meaning of the name is the Olive tree. The biblical olive tree symbolizes fruitfulness and beauty and dignity. âExtending an olive branchâ signifies an offer of peace.
So, perhaps by being the first to offer the metaphorical branch, Elio reminded Oliver who he really is; a beautiful, peaceful young man, with a lot to give.
