Hello slurp. I’m wondering how you choose what narrative to build around your characters. What inspires you . In regards to both Sidgeno and 1634 😊
Hi 🙇♀️📲. The answers for each of these is very different.
Sidgeno
Sid and Geno’s narrative has central themes of sacrifice and devotion. I think their continued commitment to each other makes it easier, lighter — they’re really not going anywhere. But because we know that they’re not going anywhere, we’ve gotta pull tension from somewhere else.
For me, I really like deconstructing Sid. I think in a lot of fanworks (in and out of this ship), Sid’s sqeaky-clean public persona is translated directly into his private personality. One of my favorite things to read (and hopefully write but I’m not sure if i’ve been successful) is a flawed Sid who is self-centered and adverse to change. Same with Geno, maybe a Geno who won’t communicate effectively because he’s afraid of being vulnerable and being misconstrued. I think most of their conflict comes naturally, pushed by external factors, but their immense respect for each other and genuine enjoyment of each other’s company drives them into miscommunication and misunderstanding rather than something more direct and nasty. They’re older, comfortable — not to say they can’t be mean or bicker, but that foundation is rock solid if you write them in the 2020s. (Yes I know about contractgate. I still think that foundation is there.)
Because of all of this, I think a major connective tissue in my Sidgeno is safety and comfort. These are people who have seen each other at almost every stage in life, who have found devotion in a hostile culture. They’ve both endured a lot to be here and I think I often create a safe space in their relationship.
1634
I really feel these are the messiest people in the NHL. I know people say 1634 is Sidgeno with a bad ending… I don’t think so. Mitch and Auston are younger, less tempered characters with a lot left to prove. They’re sick of public scrutiny and both share a testy relationship with media; neither of them have Cups.
Mitch and Auston will hurt each other on purpose. They post shit to get the other’s attention, they poke and prod at sore spots, they blatanly lie to piss the other person off.
They’re a modern couple. Instagram, snapchat, spotify playlists, those all really mean something in their narrative and that’s something I really enjoy about them.
Pre-trade, though, I think its clear that Auston was (is) head-over-heels. They’re a little bit of an odd couple, with Auston being calm, reserved, introverted, and Mitch being the life of the locker room. I think they provide an immense amount of balance for each other, but their relationship will always have a lot of energy, positive or negative. To me, they always read smitten and sickening, like those couples you see in amusement park ride lines hanging off of each other.
They’re openly ridiculous people (💙) who continue to tie their threads together publicly. I think writing characters that share so much emotion towards each other (whichever emotion it is can change at any time) creates a really wide array of plots that feel like them still.
I love their volatility and obsession. And also that i can write ridiculous shit and it feels like well yeah, probably.
Also,
I think a lot of the reasons I make certain choices is because of where the narratives are right now.
Sid and Geno seem to be closer than ever, working towards the closing chapters of very successful careers. They kept all of their promises to each other.
Auston and Mitch are hot and cold. One minute Auston’s lying about looking over, the next, Mitch is reportedly outside the Leafs locker room asking for him. Their story is running and running and running still and it seems it’ll continue for another ten years.
And love writing both. Thankful to whatever stuck these guys together so I can pour over every narrative imaginable.
Thank you for the ask!!!!!!!!!!!!
