The odds were low, but one can't help but think of these things when hiking through the tallus caves, which are caves made out of fallen boulders, in Pinnacles National Park. Eventually, our national parks trip had to cross the ocean to hit the national parks in Hawaii and American Samoa. Tough job, I know, but someone had to do it. Our first stop was to visit the incredible Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. If I had to sum up our time exploring this amazing place, it would be with this one photo: rainbows, flowing lava, and coastline. We are so excited to start sharing our experiences in this awesome park. We will be posting the full gallery soon (on our project website) but for now, let's just enjoy this beautiful scene. At the end of the Chain of Craters road in Volcanoes National Park you can spot a really cool arch, called the Holei Sea Arch. This arch was formed by a process called differential erosion, whereby different layers of hardness in separate lava flows erode at different paces. However beautiful this arch is, it will not last long, as it will eventually fall victim to the continuous pounding of the sea. But what the sea takes, the sea also gives, for another arch will (in time) form along the coast through the same process.
