Dumb Laws---California has had a new state frog since June --Saints be praised!
Yes, you read that right. This June Governor Brown signed AB 2364, V. Manuel PĂ©rezâs State amphibian: California red-legged frog bill into law.
The following is a snipit copy from the legislative counselâs digest :
Geez, that just has to be one heck of a typo: âExisting law establishes the state fag.â Well if that isnât politically incorrect, what is?
Now back to the California red-legged frog and its appointment has our latest state mascot. They are big and are exclusively a California frog with some relatives sited down in Baja and Mexico. They know the good life when they see it.
The bill credits Mark Twain for making the amphibian famous in his story: âThe Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.â  So apparently we can blame him.
The lawâs summary states: âThe California red-legged frogâs unique place in Californiaâs history extends as far back as the 19th century Gold Rush. Miners, known as forty-niners, consumed nearly 80,000 frogs per year, nearly eating the species into extinction.â
Imagine having nearly your entire species sauté? We owe them.
The new lawâs legal summary sums up: Though it no longer has to fear the fork the species faces a myriad of other natural and man-made threats. By natural threats they mean, though we arenât eating these frogs anymore something is. Their habitat has also supposedly shrunk by 70% since the great Gold Rush bake-off. Not only have we limited where they roam we have introduced invasive species to annoy them and co-habitat in their limited habitat.
They have been consumed to near oblivion and the survivors made practically homeless. In 1996 the Feds placed the red legged frog on the federal threatened (not endangered, actually threatened, like it was dinner time all over again) species list.
With this new California law they will be protected from the saucepan forever. As God is my witness, I will be hungry again.
Californiaâs brand is complete with the addition of the red-legged frog to our list of state icons; the grizzly bear, redwood trees, poppies, the desert tortoise and Ghirardelli chocolate.
