A Tribe Called Quest “Check The Rhime” (1991)
I can thank WBLS’ Kid Capri for playing this when 1991′s The Low End Theory came out, as it’s the first I heard of A Tribe Called Quest. “The Jazz (We Got)” came after and I was good from then on. “Check The Rhime” introduced us all to Industry Rule #4080 (”record company people are shady”), forever creating a theme in hip-hop where rap artists took shots at their own labels and spat of music industry’s mischievous practices. Thank Quest’s label Jive for that one.
And the samples. We can’t forget about the sample carousel that made “Check The Rhime” a staple of golden-era hip-hop. Grover Washington, Jr’s “Hydra” (’75), Dalton & Dubarri’s “I’m Just A Rock N’ Roller” (’76), Lafayette Afro Rock Band’s “Hihache” (’73), Brother Jack McDuff’s “Oblighetto” (’70), and the two biggest ones in Minnie Riperton’s “Baby This Love I Have” (’75) and Average White Band’s “Love Your Life” (’76). Even Biz Markie’s hanging on to grab that brass ring. How is this not enshrined in the Hip-Hop Hall Of Fame?
