Happy #3FatesFactsFriday! Today’s fact is brought to you by 🐝! Today I’m going to share a little local history with you all as this is an infamous story from right here in the #HauntedHudsonValley. George Markert was an incredibly successful farm worker in the area that was accused by his brother-in-law of having put a curse upon his brother-in-laws’ farm as it was not prospering in the same way as his own. His brother-in-law, Adam Heidt, accused George of everything from causing his cows to run dry to the man bewitching him any time he did something in a succession of three around him. This ill-will between the men quickly turned to a murder plot when Heidt demanded Markert remove the supposed curse after meeting at a local tavern. When Markert refused, claiming he never placed a curse in the first place, he quickly left the tavern to head home. However, this would turn to be a deadly mistake when he was followed by Adam Heidt who met up with his son, Joseph Heidt, upon the majestic Stone Arch Bridge in Kenoza Lake. It is upon this tri-arched bridge the two would proceed to kill Markert choosing this spot as warlocks were believed to be powerless above running water. Unfortunately, this is where the story gets even more gruesome. Heidt believed that the only way to thoroughly detroy the curse Markert had placed upon his farm and berid himself of his brother-in-law’s evil for good was to murder him utilizing three different methods. The two Heidts stabbed, shot, and beat Markert to death upon the Stone Arch Bridge before tossing his body over the bridge into the frozen waters of the Callicoon Creek below. However, the saddest part of this story is the lack of justice for George Markert as Adam Heidt was acquitted and sent to Middletown’s insane asylum and Joseph served less than two decades in prison before being released back into the real world. Perhaps this very lack of justice is the reason so many residents of the county claim to see the ghost of George Markert still wandering the bridge searching for help on cold January nights. 👻 #3FPP #Ghoststories #RealGhostStories #Paranormal #ParanormalActivity #HudsonValley #HauntedNY #Goth #Haunted #Witchcraft https://www.instagram.com/p/CKWZB5Fsesk/?igshid=lmued51whzxy
