KNB 211 - Unit Goals
Achieving Believable Character Animation in 3D:
The character on the screen should appear to be a thinking, moving and breathing independent being
Medium transparency - make the audience forget that the digital puppet is being moved around by someone.
The characters actions appear authentic and relevant to the context of the shot or sequence.
They move in a believable way with a sense of weight, physicality and appeal.
Assignment 2 - Planning
Assignment 2 is a Lip-sync task where we are given a 15 second long piece of dialog from a movie that we have to re-imagine and act out.
We were given the dialog and I immediately thought of a having it set in a coffee shop with Phil (the male voice) moping over a coffee with Rita (female voice) preoccupied with cleaning a camera.
Having seen Groundhog day once before I was worried that I had remembered the actual scene from the movie, I re-watched the movie (the first time I saw it years ago, I found it really annoying but this time was quite enjoyable). In the movie he is badgering her as she is putting camera equipment away in a van, so my idea was clear.
I drew a few sketches of them trying to find a good way to frame the conversation to convey her disinterest and his depression. First was her on the floor in the foreground hunched over a camera and him at the bar behind her, but this was too relaxed for Phil, the second was similar the the final but with Phil in the foreground bemoaning a coffee and her on a table behind but he should be speaking to her, trying to get her attention without turning away from the camera.
I think the final shot captures the mood well, I was worried putting him behind would take the focus away from him, but if we keep him close to the center and her off to the side, it should keep the attention on him.

Assignment 1 - Obstacle course
Here is the Final Product of my labor, I wish I had more time to refine It more, all i had time for was two or three passes while i was making each section but I encountered a lot of difficulty along the way (as shown In previous posts) and I feel I've learnt from it. For next time, I’ll plan each action more thoughtfully, and now I have a little experience, I’ll try to plan my approach BEFORE starting and spending too much time on something that may not work.
Even through the adversity, I did enjoy the task, I just wish I had 6 weeks instead of 2 so I could make the version I wanted to make originally (see first post about blocking)
Thanks for Reading and I hope you saw something worth seeing.
I thought I would show the camera of the the character’s back while climbing and using the grease pencil tool while working out how to have the character’s body rise while keeping the hands in the same place. It helped Immensely discovering that you could change the parenting of the hands from following the shoulders to have them relative to the environment(world). In hind sight, I should have done the same with the feet, i would have saved a lot of messing around.
