I could have died at three of a unknown malignant virus I could have died at five of a missile fired by mistake I almost died at ten during the floodings on Pluto At twenty I survived the bombings of the cosmic war I should have died at thirty when a meteor struck the earth I nearly died at forty when my spaceship crashed on Mars I could have died at sixty when my warehouse caught fire I nearly died at seventy during the summer hurricane I could have died at eighty during the landslide on Mercury I almost died at ninety when my cargo sank in the sea I swam five hours before jellyfishermen rescued me One hundred years today up to start my second century I will die today at one hundred My assembler says he won't repair me I will die today at one hundred He says it will be cheaper to replace me

Auf Wierdersehen, Funker Vogt
If you're anything like me, you're probably spending a lot of time alone at the moment, crying into your currywurst and Weissbier, distraught after reading about Jens leaving Funker Vogt. With the future of the rather manly, absolutely not slightly TOO manly but certainly war-obsessed German band in question, I've been trying to find some thematically suitable replacements to ease the pain whilst we collectively recover from this shock. Obviously, songs about war are not hard to find in this scene, but they've got to be just right if they're to help. Front 242 - Circling Overland Here we go, a song about military hardware, performed by a bunch of guys frequently seen in sleeveless tops. They're Belgian too, which is just as cool as being German as far as the Scene is concerned. Spark! - 65 Ton Stål Okay, Spark! are Swedish, which isn't really that much like being German, but they're proper EBM act so that more than makes up for the lack of bratwurst & sauerkraut habits. And, most importantly, this is a song about a tank (I assume the Leopard 2, which was also fielded by Germany so win-win!) EBM tracks about tanks are pretty much as manly-but-maybe-a-little-bit-TOO-manly as you can get, I think. FGFC820 - Killing Fields FGFC820 are rather far from the Rhine geographically, but thematically and musically this song is absolutely spot on and will work well as an FV fix. 32Crash - Merlin's Gun Yet more Belgians! Funker Vogt didn't just enjoy WW2 and the Cold War (although love those they certainly did), they also had a keen interest in sci-fi wars too. Luckily 32Crash are ready to step up to bat in this arena, since narrative songs about sci-fi wars are absolutely their thing. Die Krupps - Crossfire Starting off strong with a name that's both German and relates to war, Die Krupps can certainly act as methadone to counter your withdrawal with this track dealing with the horrors of war.
Feindflug - Gulag Oh look, it's the -other- German electro-industrial act with songs that are all about warfare. In this case, WW2. It was hard to choose a specific track since really, they only have about two songs that aren't about the Second World War, but Gulag is a particular high point. VNV Nation - Honour No, not the VNV Nation who do all those songs that couples get together/make out to and make singletons get weepy over That One Person They Miss And/Or Never Actually Spoke To But Totally Would Have Done. This is the VNV Nation who record unashamedly anthemic fist-in-the-air songs about war. And also sample Universal Soldier. Ah, those were the days. Laibach - NATO The absolute masters of keeping straight faces while playing ridiculous but simultaneously amazing cover versions, this album is actually a perfect substitute for FV, as long as you have a keen sense of irony. I never knew if Funker Vogt were actually serious with the military posing and bro-tastic hyper-masculinity. I'm not sure if I'm happier with it having been ironic or actually completely serious, but either way, Laibach's Cold War inspired album is a good thematic substitute.
