How time flies. Two weeks ago we were on holiday, enjoying the sun and the heat and today we're back to the usual menu planning and grocery shopping. But there's something I love about home life, the routine we've fallen in, the few hours we have on our own while Lizzie naps, the hours when she's awake and we get to enjoy very cheeky smiles and her personality. Currently caught on the "I want to be on holiday" & "Oh, I really love being home" pendulum. While I love being away and leaving London behind, there's something about summers in London that I really enjoy. The beer and food festivals for one, pubs with gardens or just sitting in a park (don't get to do much of the latter, but we try until Lizzie has had enough of nature). It's been a while since I got through two novels each week (reading is what a commute is good for). In the recent months, I was happy to get through a few pages a month, but that's what dealing with a small baby is like. I always imagined maternity leave to be a sleeping baby and me reading in a cute cafe. Reality is more along the lines of a not sleeping baby and a mom trying to grab a bite to eat or maybe finish one of the ten made but not drunk cups of coffee 😊 And then the baby awakes. At the moment, Lizzie is very keen to mimic us and wants to play with us, so those awake hours get fairly exhausting, but she's also settled into a bit of a routine where she has at least one long (1hr+) nap a day, maybe even two, although the second one tends to be shorter. Those are the times when we get to enjoy a cup and a bit of me time. Leaving the tree up till just after New year's to prolong this festive feeling 😊 I'm trying to take as many photos of Lizzie as humanly possible as it was her first Christmas and I'm trying to capture how small she is. It's incredible how quickly they grow. Everybody told me to enjoy having a newborn and I thought she'll be tiny for a while, but oh how wrong I was. We've now put away her newborn clothes as they're too small already and looking back at the photos I can see how much my little baby has grown in the three months. Chunky jumpers are my favourite thing about autumn and winter. There's just something about cozy and warm clothing that makes you all happy and toasty. We're enjoying maternity leave at the moment, making the most out of the time we have together, just the two of us. I was told off for being too active too soon after birth, but I learnt that you shouldn't just do the things by the book. I felt fine and the little one loves being outside, so while we appreciate the advice, we do things our own way and listen to our own schedule. As with anything in life, the same things don't work for everyone and you should be confident enough to do what feels right for you. We've both been checked by the GP today and told we're both doing great, so that just reinforces that what we're doing is right for us. I love the days Ben takes time off work to spend it with us. He's such a great dad, looking after Lizzie so I can take a bath and indulging my requests for Insta worthy photos (especially since the only photos I manage to take are of a baby in my lap). We don't have family nearby to come and lend a hand and it's sometimes pretty hard looking after a newborn day in and day out while functioning on a meagre few hours of sleep. But when that baby looks at you and smiles (or maybe it's just gas, I really don't care), it makes the sleepless nights worth it. I've got a newfound admiration for any single mum out there, you're one tough woman giving your baby all they need. In other news, my entire outfit is what you'd call recycling your wardrobe. We all know fast fashion is really bad news for environment (if you didn't, I'm sure you do after Stacey Dooley's documentary and if you still don't, I recommend you watch The True Cost) and I've been trying to be a more sensible and less impulsive shopper for over a year now. Yes, I sometimes cave in and buy new and maybe not essential items, but mostly I've got a wardrobe I can rewear. How about you? Impulsive or thoughtful shopper?
