I just realized that somehow Denethor got a woman to sleep with him TWICE.
A woman pretty enough to mother Boromir and Faramir bc they 100% did not get their good looks from their dad.

Moving a line of discussion from the comments to the ask box! If it interests you, Iâd love to hear more of your thoughts about how the marriage of Denethor and Finduilas was perceived in Gondor (or elsewhere) as it was going off the rails â did they hide it well or did everyone know something was off? And just as interestingly, what did they think the perception of their marriage was â did they think they were doing a great job presenting a polished image to the world or were they paranoid about what people might or might not be saying/thinking?
Hello!! Finally getting round to answering this, I apologise for the delay!
Denethor and Finduilas are both quite private people who would have done their best to maintain a public façade even as Finduilasâ mental health declined and she and Denethor spent ever more time in festering silence, but I think definitely after Boromirâs death that their growing issues would have been increasingly apparent. This is due to a variety of factors including Finduilasâ post-partum depression on top of the regular depression, increased disconnect and disgust for her body and, as the boys began growing up, arguments over how they should be parented.
People would definitely have noticed a cooling between them that went beyond public politeness. The Lords of Gondor may be self-involved but they are also highly tuned in to potential weaknesses within their contemporariesâ households and after two generations of Stewards having strained relationships with their wives they are used to looking for the signs. There was a noted decline in Finduilasâ health as well, people looking back at her wedding even a few years later would have been disturbed by how quiet and listless she had become, obviously making a concerted effort to make public appearances and engage in conversation with the other wives. Add the fact that there is for sure a servant or two willing to sell information about the Steward and his wife having hushed arguments and people definitely know that there is tension there. I feel like in country areas where court gossip doesnât really reach the image of the beautiful bride and the smiling groom still prevailsâthey for sure Charles and Dianaâd the hell out of Finduilas and Denethorâs weddingâbut closer to Minas Tirith and in upper class circles it is pretty much common knowledge that all is not well in the Steward household.
Denethor is a bad father
He's a good king but he treated faramir like shit damn
Currently shaking with the effort of not making a joke involving the Stewards' Rod.
i'm working on a response to an ask that @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras sent me and i am realising that in addition to Duinhir and his family being an absolute pain in Denethor's ass politically they were also just massively annoying because they kept having major life events directly when he would least appreciate it. Imagine ...
The year is 2976. You are Denethor. You are getting married to the most beautiful perfect woman on earth. Nothing can kill your buzz.
Except that Duinhir, son of the Lord of the Blackroot Vale, is also getting married to the Lady Silivren. The union of two of the most annoying people you know. Their children will be as unbearable as yours will be beautiful. Oh well. You refuse to let that ridiculous boy and his father's overblown tasteless wedding celebrations kill your vibe.

"Boromir would have done this better" is my favourite meme because... It's used as a remark to show to the person speaking they are unfair and going too far in their demands and should chill. So basically how the tables turned. Oh how would I love to see Peregrin Took comment "Boromir would have done this better" on every Denethor's action. Boromir would be a tidier eater.
what's your favourite horror film?
oh, idk, probably the relationship between faramir and denethor
(the nefarious autism whilst reading about Shelob's unspeakably transgressive and unyieldingly female gender and sexuality) it's so important that Denethor is described as a spider
