Since I missed out on the first assignment I decided to mix the two together. With the passing of my father recently I decided to make the assignment about him and to give the audience a sense of who he was and what he meant to me. I utilized pieces of fabric that had some form of emotional or memorable attachment to make it feel more personal. I also made sure every little detail within the instillation was something of his or something that he loved to give the audience a sense of who he was. I also wanted to see how all of these connected pieces would react within the space and color, which I think exemplified the mood/feeling I was trying to invoke. My choice of color initially was blue but I thought that purple would be a better choice after doing some research that in African culture they utilize the color purple to symbolize strength and royalty.

This assignment, I chose the go to a park that is personal to me and my family. We go to this park often because it’s so close to home. I made sure to catch the unique details and movement of the park. Some of these would include leaves and sidewalk dents. This allows the viewer to take in the little things rather than the whole view of it. I feel as that it is important to take some time and look at places differently. It allows for an eye opening and relaxing experience. Going to a park and looking around has always lets me breathe and shut out anything going on within my life. It’s a very peaceful and fulfilling environment, which is exactly what I wanted the viewers to feel.

For this assignment, I am framing the fabric with a canvas. I used different colored fabric and green string, which makes it stand out from the plain, white canvas. I wanted the fabric to almost fall at the viewer, so I specifically put it up high on the wall. Everyone who would be viewing it would see it from a lower perspective. The creation of the project involved cutting a whole into the canvas and stuffing the fabric within. I made sure to superglue some slabs on the back to keep the fabrics from falling out from the back. The overall concept was have the fabric be framed by the small canvas and seeming to want to get out of it.

For this assignment I wanted to recreate memorable furniture and other elements from my grandmothers house. We used to visit her house every other summer but now it’s locked away as she has moved out. In this way I recreated memories to frame the space, I made an old rocking horse, a jingling chair and a chai teacup out of different patterned fabrics. Unfortunately because of time I couldn’t figure out how to stiffen the fabric to make a distinct shape of the furniture. Instead I was able to make the shape of the rocking horse by sewing two pieces of fabrics together and stuffing them with crumpled paper. I decided to use a farm house fabric because of the nostalgia it created. Lastly I hung up the other fabric pieces with fishing line, though the shapes weren’t exact they still provided the general idea of the object.

At the beginning, I wanted to do sunflowers as the main concept, but two of my peers have already used sunflowers for their past assignment, so I decided to do something different and do just regular flowers as the main idea. I was originally planning on doing more than 10 flowers to create some kind of flower wall hanging from the ceiling to the same fishing line, but the flowers were a little too hard to make and I didn’t have enough of the same fabric to create enough flowers. I wanted to create the Floating Flower Garden located in Tokyo, but again I didn’t have enough materials to create more than 10 flowers! When in class, my friend told me the upside down flowers somehow looked like The Great Hall floating candles in the movie Harry Potter and that’s when I had the idea of bringing my speaker from home and playing the Harry Potter theme song so people can have more of a visual representation of what the whole project idea is about. I also decided to buy an LED light from Amazon and it worked perfectly with the project because I didn’t copy the Harry Potter idea, but I made it my own and it was an overall success!!

For this piece, I wanted to connect my love for animation to how I framed the space. I wanted to shape the bandana to model a boxed TV so that when I placed the screen inside, it would display my works as if it were playing from it. The materials used are a square shaped cardboard box and a series of colorful bandanas that would match my highly saturated and color arts style. It gives off a bubbly tone that illustrates my fondness for the practice. If I had more time to add any additions to this piece, I would have brought in my dad's tablet as I later realized that his screen would project perfectly within the box since it was around its size.
