Are trolls compelled to prevent every proto-kismesissitude, or are there auspisticable and non-auspisticable caliginous relationships? It’s stated below that this is about monogamy, so maybe Kanaya’s ashen instinct has decided that CA is a better kismesis for Vriska than Tavros.

The Kanaya/Vriska/Tavros triad is pretty interesting, actually. Kanaya’s positioned equally between Vriska and Tavros, implying that she’s holding both of them back - but the only one she’s actually mediating is Vriska. I guess the ashen urge also applies to one-sided caliginous ‘crushes’.

Auspisticism is the ashen quadrant. Without it, no ashen feud would become caliginous, because there’d be no such thing as an ‘ashen feud’. Maybe I’m misunderstanding something.

The implication is that widespread black infidelity is a bad thing - but it’s unclear if trolls are exclusively monogamous. Regardless, a large caliginous polycule would be a feedback loop of horrible emotions, which would get very dangerous very fast - especially if it’s composed of psychic teenagers. Can’t have our little soldiers murdering each other before the draft, can we? 

All this to say - I understand the need for auspisticism. I contend, however, that this is a role that very few trolls could fill. It requires social skills that most of these kids aren’t going to posses - and it heaps a responsibility on your shoulders that many couldn’t bear. 

It’s driven by a biological urge though, so that doesn’t really matter - you’re compelled to do it anyway.

The relationships each quadrant describes tend to be malleable, if not volatile, especially on the concupiscent half where more torrid emotions reside. It doesn't take much to flip a switch and transmute blackrom feelings to redrom, and vice versa. In many cases, one party will have red feelings while the other has black. But it will often be the case that one party's feelings will swap to match the other's, since there is no quadrant which naturally accommodates such a disparity. But thereafter, it's not uncommon for the two to toggle between red and black in unison now and then. These scenarios naturally result in both red and black infidelities.

You’re expected to be monogamous, and you can’t mix quadrants. This shit would get so messy, so fast, and I think it’s worth drafting a quick case study. 

Alysse loves Bauube, and Bauube hates Alysse. They both want to pursue something together, but their conflicting feelings don’t fit into the quadrant system, which requires those feelings to match. 

Alysse starts to resent Bauube for not wanting her as a matesprit. This actually fixes their problem, because their matching hate makes them valid kismeses.

Bauube realizes he admires Alysse, for having the emotional strength to shift quadrants. He falls in love with her, breaking their kismesissitude and inverting their original relationship. 

Alysse thinks she could love Bauube again - but while they were caliginous, she met a new matesprit, Claare. 

Claare is pissed off at Alysse, for not telling her about Bauube - so then she flips quadrants, and so on.
