September 19, 2023: Princess Leonor has received, at the General Military Academy, the officerโs saber along with the 560 newly admitted cadets for access to the Officer Scales of the General, Quartermaster and Polytechnic Engineer Corps of the Army, as well as the Civil Guard Corps.
Chaired by Brigadier General Manuel Pรฉrez Lรณpez, director of the General Military Academy, the second-year cadets have handed over their officer sabers to the members of a new class of lord and lady cadets. This internal ceremony, one of the most traditional of those carried out at the General Military Academy, has been significant for being the first in which recently admitted students participate and because it symbolizes the obtaining of their titles of lord or lady cadet.
Currently, the use of the saber is limited to solemn acts and ceremonies, being carried by those who command the units. Therefore, this acquires a primary value as a symbol of the command that the cadets who are now joining officer training will exercise in a few years. Thus, with the reception of the saber, the lord or lady cadet assumes the command function for which they must prepare, formalizing the obligation to embrace the values of patriotism, honor, loyalty and service, the basis of his moral training, collected in the cadetโs decalogue.
On the other hand, and as is tradition, the participation of the lord and lady cadets of the second year has also been fundamental in the ceremony, since, on them, as components of an older class, the responsibility of materializing the delivery is placed of the sabers that will distinguish their companions as future officers. This delivery is sealed, individually, with a fraternal hug.
During the event, the number one cadets of the 82nd and 83rd classes gave speeches in which they highlighted, on the one hand, the life of service, dedication, dedication and selflessness that they have chosen, and on the other, the firm commitment of face the harshness of military life with the purpose of becoming the officers who inspire the โspirit of La Generalโ, a common and cohesive element of all officers trained at the Academy.
