とても広大な敷地に立派な大木が幾つも聳え立ち、大きな灯籠が威厳を発するように横に居座っている。昭和の初めに建てられたという洋館が、昔のままの姿で、木々の隙間から垣間見えた。
子どもたちがセミを追っかけて、大きな木の下を走り回っていた。その後ろを、暑い日差しを避けるツバの広い帽子をかぶった若い母親が、笑いながら追いかける。
今でこそ行政が管理する、誰にでも開放された公園になっているけど、戦前は貴族の土地で、限られた階級の人たちしか入れなかった場所だ。
昔、そこで客人が招かれた邸宅はいまは国の重要文化財となっているらしい。
そんなものには目もくれずに、空を突き抜けるように伸びた大きな木の周りを、親子がセミを追っかけて走り回る姿に、なにかすべての前提を吹っ飛ばすような力強さと正しさを感じた。
