Who is Martin O'Malley, and should Hillary Clinton be afraid of him?
It is no secret that Hillary Clinton has high ambitions to be this nation’s 45th president, however another Democrat may be coming out of the woodwork to usurp her chance again. That Democrat is Martin O’Malley.
If you don’t know the answer to that question don’t feel bad. Unless you live in Maryland, the name Martin O’Malley will not mean much to you. Martin O’Malley is the current governor of Maryland and yes, a Democrat.
However this is just a superficial picture of the man that CNN has dubbed “The hardest-working man in Democratic politics.” So why is he working so hard?
The reason: O’Malley is putting in the overtime to ensure that as many Democrats win their elections as possible. According to CNN, he has attended over 80 Democratic fundraisers since last year (he may even trump Obama bin Laden in fundraiser attendance), 40 campaign events and more rubber chicken dinners than should be humanly allowed.
O’Malley is also a favorite on the Socialist news channel MSNBC and has even chaired the Democratic Governors Association from 2011 until 2013. In short, Martin O’Malley is a leftist tool. However he is not your average leftist tool.
Most Democrat supporters are willing to travel to the large areas like Boston, Los Angeles and New York, yet very few are willing to travel to areas 1000 miles from nowhere in order to help a county commissioner win his race. O’Malley is. So why is O’Malley willing to hit places that no one has ever heard of in order to help candidates that only a handful of people have any knowledge of?
Ask O’Malley and he will say that he is doing it for the party.
“I am doing everything in my power to strengthen the party in every state and to elect as many Democrats as I can…Call me old-fashioned, but it’s been my experience that we can only govern effectively when we make our party stronger.”
While this sounds nice and will surely endear him to the low-information crowd, there is another reason why he is doing all of this: connections. In all of his travels Martin O’Malley has shored up his connections with Democrats at the head of the party, as well as the ones in districts that no one ever thinks about, and that could pay off in 2016. The big question is will it work?
If I were to place odds on Martin O’Malley’s chances today to take the White House, I would say he has zero chance. All of his work aside, he only has 1% of the recognition needed to pull off a victory, but November of 2016 is still two years away, and a lot could change between now and then.
The truth is that O’Malley has outpaced many of his contemporaries, including Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Democratic stalwart Hillary Clinton. Right now Hillary has the lion’s share, but she has several strikes against her.
Several months ago Republican strategist Karl Rove told Fox News that Hillary may be too old to make a successful White House bid.
“In American politics, there’s a sense you want to be new. You don’t want to be too familiar. You want to be something fresh. You don’t want to be something old and stale…Hillary may have the impression in people’s minds that she’s both the third term of Barack Obama … and a third term for Bill Clinton, which is now 20 years in the rear view mirror.” Karl Rove
Rove added a second point that voters “don’t like people who have it sort of already made, they want to see a scrapper, they want to see a fighter.”
Both of these points could weigh heavily against Hillary. In 1992 her husband Bill was unrecognizable outside of Arkansas, yet he was able to defeat incumbent George H.W. Bush and become the 42nd president. Fast forward to 2008, Hillary was the favorite to win the primaries until she was beaten by an unknown senator named Barack Obama. Both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were fighters.
Hillary, on the other hand, is considered the Grande Dame of the Democrat Party. So the odds are that another scrappy fighter, say one named Martin O’Malley, could beat her in the primaries a second time. Of course all of this is still speculation. Now the real question is if O’Malley won, what would he bring to the table? That question is easy to answer: all you have to do is look at Maryland.
During his CNN interview O’Malley mentioned some of his highlights as Maryland’s governor. Those highlights include:
Creating tuition breaks for illegal aliens.
Enacting some of the strictest gun control laws.
Repealing the death penalty.
If these are what O’Malley considers accomplishments, then we as a nation may be severely screwed again. O’Malley is cut from the same dangerous liberal cloth as our current president with one exception: unlike Obama, O’Malley is able to get things done.
Obama failed to pass a DREAM Act. O’Malley succeeded. Obama‘s anti-gun agenda has been blocked at every turn, O’Malley was able to pass his gun control measures. Now O’Malley did have the luxury of passing his agenda in a predominantly blue state. He did not have to worry about conservative states like Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas standing in his way but would have to if he were to win in 2016. Despite successfully pushing his anti-American agenda in Maryland, the national stage may prove too challenging.
For now, Martin O’Malley is the governor in Maryland and still relatively unknown on a national level. Will his extensive travels to campaign for fellow Democrats in need help him in the long run?
As Yoda said “Difficult to see, the future is.” O’Malley’s travels have earned him friends at all levels of the party, and that could be helpful come 2016. On the other side of that argument, he still has to connect with the voters, and this year’s mid-term elections should determine whether or not that is a possibility. For now all we can do is watch and wait.
