Robert Sugden: Christopher Smith (1999)
I’m glad it’s not me who’s going to be telling him. And the mood he’s in. He’ll murder ya.
In the latest episode, Jack thinks he’s gonna have both boys working on the farm for their work experience but Robert has other ideas. He wants to go into computing. Sorry Jack but the farm is your dream not Robert’s. He very much is forward thinking with his interest in computers. I’m breaking this up into two parts so I can post the videos for four of the five scenes. This first part has the first two scenes combined.
Scene 1: The boys are all set to go to school but they need some forms signed - for work experience week. Andy’s all for helping on the farm but Sarah ixnay’s it BUT Jack is getting around her. She signed the form, they can help on the farm for their work experience.
Sarah: Jack, I thought we said no working on the farm during term time.
Jack: Well you’ve just given them permission.
Sarah: What?
Jack: You signed them up for work experience week haven’t you?
Sarah: So?
Jack: So they could do their work experience here. (Ughhhh, Jack is way way too pleased to have his free labor back and above board 🤬)
Scene 2: It starts off with Andy about talking about getting his name changed when the adoption comes through and then segues to Graham tracking down the boys, specifically Robert, who hasn’t handed in his work experience week. Robert saying it hasn’t been signed yet. There’s no rush since he’s going to be working on the farm right? Wrong. He’d rather do something else like computing. Sure, no problem. He’ll see want he can do. Andy though warns Robert Jack won’t be a happy camper.
Andy: Great. That’s all we need.
Robert: What?
Andy: Jack thinks you’re going to be working for him on the farm.
Robert: So?
Andy: So? I’m glad it’s not me who’s going to be telling him. And the mood he’s in. He’ll murder ya.

How would you know what I want? You’ve never asked.
In the second set of scenes, we get Jack’s reaction about Robert not wanting to work on the farm and Richie offering to show Robert what is involved with computing. The clip is scene 3 and 4 combined.
Scene 3: Jack whinging on about the price of lambs and being ‘sick of flaming sandwiches.’ Then make your own tea then Sarah retorts. Oh please he can’t do that as he’s working all day and it’s different from her work (really?!?). ‘Cooking’s not the same as farming.’ (Give me strength). Moving on, Sarah’s having a night out with Angie since it’s her night off so he has to babysit. Enter the boys looking for a goalie (Pete’s not around so why not Jack). Nay to that, how about farm work! That’s a yes from Andy but a no for Robert as he wants to go on the computer. And there’s something else…
Robert: Dad. I talked to Mr. Clark at school today.
Jack: Oh well. I mean you still got plenty of time when you do your work experience.
Robert: Dad.
Jack: What?
Robert: It’s about working here.
Jack: What about it? You do want to, don’t you.
Scene 4: Jack’s attitude about Robert’s interest is pathetic (‘Computing. He wants to be a computer programmer.’) but he hasn’t decided for certain. But Robert has the farm, it’s what’s he worked so hard to give him blah blah blah (‘he’s been slugging me guts out for nothing’). But then there’s the rub, Robert is his son, not Andy. Jack apologizes, he meant about the farm staying in the family and he thought that’s what Robert wanted. Well, did he ever ask Robert what HE wanted? (Nope!)
Sarah: Why not, it’s a good job.
Jack: He’s got the farm! Why do you think I work every hour that god sends. It’s not for the money is it? Look at it. It’s all I’ve got to give him, Sarah.
Scene 5: At the pub having drinks with Angie, Sarah fills her in on Robert’s computer path (‘he thinks it involves flash cars and loads of money.’). Scott and Richie overhear them. Richie can affirm it’s hard work and he’ll even tell Robert.
Sarah: Don’t tell me, tell Robert.
Richie: Alright, I will.
Sarah: What?
Richie: Bring him down one day next week as I don’t mind showing him what goes on.
