something thats so prevalent in the early emmerdale eras is that the single foundation the sugdens are built on is forgiveness and family above everything. sam just nearly died of illness and jack went to apologize if it was him that caused any of the trouble, especially because sam fell ill in ireland and he was only there because he disapproved of jack trying to marry pat when she was divorced. and while sam still disagrees with the choice he is still able to forgive and love jack. and also this trait is in all of them… its why joe and jack always make up, and why annie lowkey hates jack but still loves him anyway … and obviously as time progresses the show gets much more ‘radical’/dramatic, the issues we are dealing with are a lot more complex. but is so interesting/sad how far the sugdens have strayed from this? and also this trait has somehow been transferred to the dingles? seriously why do they let cain get away with what he gets away with ??
and then its like when do we think it started … jack disowning andy? Giving up on rob in 2005? annie dragging rob for not attending jacks funeral? even recently … vic giving up on rob post gorge, john being written irredeemably, rob giving up on serena today … this is kinda why vic is The sugden to me, because her character is in so many ways a direct reflection of the original sugden family… family first, and so forgiving. she is so like annie in this way, even when they are upset at family members its only because said family member has disrespected the family first. but its not like the others dont exhibit these traits too… rob eventually forgiving andy for killing sarah, andy forgiving rob and katie for their affair and andy in some way moving past rob killing katie … idk. i guess ive just been thinking of forgiveness as a trait i value a lot in general r recently, especially when it is and isnt deserved etc, and what was once the foundational sugden trait just feels as if its not there anymore… was lost along the way with jack, or robert … and theyve kinda just been reduced to this strong willed/fiery personality farming family ? when they used to be so much more. but with the significant decrease in narrative focus and actual sugden characters comes the loss of their foundational traits and family character … 🤷♀️
