Edinburgh Castle was a sight to behold, of strong parapets and grand heights, thick stone walls and streets that wound like a small village, all situated atop a steep rocky outcrop, surrounded by sheer cliff sides so inhospitable they barely supported the yellow flowers and mosses that grew there. The castle loomed over the town below, one way in and one way out. Cannons dotted the battlements like dark eyes, surveying the cobblestone pathway leading up to the stone castle. Through a thick portcullis, the castle opened into a large courtyard, one of many, the steeply sloped cobble stones slick with the rain that drizzled incessantly from the sky. The castle itself, though now converted into a display of the royal and military history of Scotland, was the size of a small town. On the high upper battlements there was a full, flourishing garden, green and bright from the constant rains, dotted with well-kept purple and white flowers. The sloping pathways and steep steps lead to open cobbled courtyards one after the other, and the inside of the mighty great hall and cramped displays of Scottish lineage smelled slightly of the damp, difficult to keep outside considering everyone was let in. Kingly faces from Robert the Bruce to James I of England adorned the walls, and the decorations were replicas of ancient swords and gifts given to the kings by popes and other foreign dignitaries. The crown jewels of Scotland were also on display, the genuine sword, the scepter, the crown, and the stone. The Stone of Destiny was the most interesting of all of them, though not because it exceeded them in beauty. It was a simply gray stone, but it was said to ordain the next king of Scotland more than any crown, and dated back to the first king. It was plain and square, but with indents that looked a bit like the footsteps of the kings of the past. Despite the stone’s bloody past, it had returned home to Edinburgh and was in a place of honor, within a stormy keep high on a tower of stone.
