LIAM PAYNE believes younger generations should be getting excited about Formula E due to the sustainability of the electric series.
The solo artist and former member of One Direction was in Hong Kong experiencing electric racing for the first time at Round Five of the Formula E championship.
And Payne was impressed with what he saw at the city centre event as he was shown the ropes by series founder Alejandro Agag. The 25-year-old was particularly keen to highlight the eco-friendly technology and cost-saving regulations that he feels will resonate with his own fanbase.
“It is a great message to spread having a more sustainable sport,” he said. “We are the future generations of this planet so it is important to spread the message [about sustainability]. Someone was telling me a stat about electric cars on the road and since Formula E has started that has gone up quite a lot. We just went out in the BMW i8 for the first time and it’s an amazing car, amazing speeds that it’s able to reach but with a sustainable source, which is really cool.”
Payne was driven on a hot lap of the Hong Kong ePrix circuit by Agag, with the pair broadcasting on Instagram live as the pop superstar tried to draw a portrait of his host behind the wheel.
The video drew 30,000 live viewers while the singer later posted a photograph of himself strapped into the car which has gathered over 400,000 likes.
Agag is hoping that associating with celebrities who have such a wide reach will open up his series to new audiences. “In Formula E we have this target of getting to a younger demographic,” he said. “We want to get new fans into motorsport, and the problem with motorsport is that the fanbase is growing older. Having the help of people like Liam reach that audience and get them hooked into the sport, which is very important.”
