Giovedì notte, al grande acceleratore LHC del Cern di Ginevra, i protoni si sono scontrato all’energia record di 13 TeV per la prima volta, prima di arrivare alla eccezionale energia di 14 TeV, prevista a breve (inizio giugno), per capire meglio cosa è avvenuto subito dopo il Big Bang.
Questi test aiutano a capire come proteggere l’acceleratore e i rivelatori dalle particelle che si allontanano dai bordi del fascio. Una parte fondamentale del processo è stata la messa a punto dei collimatori. Questi dispositivi che assorbono le particelle vaganti sono stati adeguati in condizioni di collisione con travi. Fasci collidenti resteranno nella LHC per diverse ore. Il team di LHC operazioni continuerà a monitorare la qualità del fascio e l’ottimizzazione del set-up.
Questa è una parte importante del processo che permetterà ai team sperimentali che gestiscono i rivelatori ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, LHCf, MOEDAL e TOTEM per far partire definitivamente i loro esperimenti.
