This episode’s main theme is centered around jewelry and personal embellishment. Not a joke!

A. I must admit that today was the first time I sat down and thought....”Hey....Is the first horseman in Supernatural a.......queercoded villian?” And like...OK I get the whole monsters inc trend or whatever about having secret evil 1% weak handshake business people who are the Real Monsters. But....after a certain point it just kinda horseshoes back around, like how this episode ends with the conclusion of “The whole war problem was caused by a man wearing jewelry!!!!” and “Once we violently get the shiny jewelry off that man we will all be free from these unholy violent urges threatening our good society.”

And it’s not just the ring either! It’s also the very shiny very flashy mustang that allows him to get trapped and defeated!! If he had simply not chosen to drive such a flamboyant car, then he would not have stood out among the good just pickup trucks and minivans of the righteous world and thus so been allowed to be struck down by the good righteous people. 

Sorry but!! 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️ If we see you enjoying your appearance at all that probably means you are here to destroy our perfect apple pie lives and we have to kill you for it.

B. A second and similar plot point shows us Dean giving up his most prominent piece of jewelry, the Samulet, to his best boy angel friend. And...it’s very much framed as this kind of character growth thing, like Dean is shedding his old ways? He’s realized what’s important and it’s not a necklace?

It’s like, these two men could be fighting over a piece of jewelry as a character beat, or even finding a way to share the item between themselves, but actually....No! This one man just turns out to be above silly things like necklaces. The other man will later become a gay angel. Very King Solomon cutting the baby in half esque!!
