If you look at key drivers of success as hard work, mindset, luck, and privilege, then the degree to which each of these influence the success of an individual is almost always inversely proportional to how said individual perceives their influence. Which is to say, if you ask someone who’s successful what got to where they are, they’d most likely say it’s their hard work, followed by the right mindset, then maybe luck -- if they’re generous with themselves -- and then on rare occasions, privilege: passport, skin colour, genetics, family... things they didn’t have any control over.

Rohan wrote about it recently on his blog, along with a chart that explains it better than I can write it.

I thought about this because I was talking about billionaires recently. Benevolent billionaires, specifically. These mega rich people who have decided to use their money to bring about some change that they deem necessary for humanity. 

Citations Needed has a very good two-part episode about that.

So this was no longer charity work. It was based on this very businessy model of ‘We know what’s best for society. We can pump in certain monies to do certain things because we know how to best spend it and the government does not. And certainly the people do not. The people down there, the proletariat, the unwashed masses do not know how to spend this money.’

There’s something about these sort of billionaires that irks me.  I society that has someone like Jeff Bezos exits -- or even Bill Gates -- is deeply broken on some fundamental level.
