Ranting a bit here under cut cause I wanna !!! Uhm obviously this is based on the scene in the s3 finale where Veronica sacrifices herself (changed my life !!!) for her friends and BETTY. Initially it was just gonna be that in some way but then when I was sketching the dress I saw that it has roses on it (or some type of flowers) and I'm not wasting an opportunity with thorns. The thorns on her jacket are very much inspired by nerves because a. It looks cool, and b. Think of it as a representation of her being controlled. By Penelope here, but mainly obviously her father. It's the control she doesn't have and the one her father is trying to hold over her and it's painful. Hence, thorns. I skipped the pattern on the dress itself to not overcrowd it and cause I didn't have any good ideas for how to structure the pattern, and not just make more nerves. The thorns on the chalice are mainly just an continued aesthetic choice, just another representation of the pain shes in and what she's putting herself through in her continued attempts to protect her friends and the town. The crown of thorns is very obviously well a biblical reference. Jesus died for our sins and his father, Veronica (and her friends) were put through challenges for the TOWNS sins and she's always been the blame of her fathers sins (by both him and everyone) and she chose to die for it. The thorn crown was also used to mock Jesus for thinking he had authority, just like her father doesn't believe she has any control or power. You could AlSo see it as given her family's power and prestige she's in a way royal, except her crown is painful and just as much controlling her as their "people" or whatever, more so almost because they're all just tools to get to her. Thereby also connecting back into the nervous system of thorns, control and lack of it. Except this IS also in a way an action she's in control over, she is taking it back by doing this, her father doesn't want her dead, and she's defying the rules to save her friends. She's wanted to die for long and now she finally had the opportunity to do it in a way that can make up for her and her father's actions because it's saving her friends !!! The light and pose also is very akin to being on stage and her singing, it's a spectacle !!! :)
