The room was dark and warm, and Jace was less-than-focused on the âhorrorâ movie that Simon picked out. Apparently, Simon and Clary had watched it together when they were young and had found it terrifying, but when your entire life could be construed as a mundane horror movie, it was underwhelming.
Jace was stretched out across the couch, his head resting in Simonâs lap. He was relaxed, it had been a long day, and Simon was running his fingers through his hair - Jace wasnât used to this degree of gentleness. He felt his lips curl into the smallest of smiles and his eyes closed of their own accord.
The next thing Jace knew, the end credits were playing and Simon was laughing softly above him. âYou fell asleep,â he pointed out, his hand still stroking Jaceâs hair.
âI did,â Jace replied. âWere there any nightmares?â Since heâd died and been brought back, nightmares had plagued him nearly every time he slept. Simon was the only one he trusted with this information, and he hadnât shared it with anyone.
âNope,â Simon answered. âYou slept like a baby.â
Jace didnât say anything for a moment, thinking about the best way to phrase what he wanted to say. He wanted it to sound like he was joking, so that Simon wouldnât be freaked out. âMaybe I should sleep with you every night,â he settled on, forcing a cocky grin onto his face.
âIf you think it would help, I would sleep with you every single night,â Simon said, completely sincere. He smiled at Jaceâs confusion - he hadnât expected Simon to agree. âI mean it,â Simon told him before leaning down and pressing his lips to Jaceâs forehead, a gesture that meant more to Jace than heâd ever admit.

The night air was warm, a ghost of the hot summer day that preceded it. The bon fire that had stretched into the dark sky had dimmed â now only ashes and glowing embers remained. Simon was the only one left outside, everyone else had retreated to their tents about half an hour ago. He was stretched out in the damp grass, one hand behind his head, the other digging into the soft earth. He stared up at the stars, unable to remember the last time heâd seen them light this â bright and prominent, unobstructed by the city lights.
As he gazed at the stars above, Simon couldnât stop his mind from wandering to thoughts of his father. It had been years since he passed away â Simon was young when it happened, too young to fully comprehend it, and Rebecca had told him that whenever he missed him all he had to do was look for the brightest star, that it was their father watching over them. It wasnât an easy task when they were in the city, but on nights like this, Simon found himself struggling to pick the brightest one.
Simon was startled from his reverie by Jaceâs voice in his ear, close enough that he should have known he was there. âWhat are you thinking about?â Jace asked, his eyes intent in the low light.
âMy dad,â Simon replied before telling Jace the story about searching for his father among the stars.
Jace didnât say anything for a while. He looked distant as he stared at the night sky, his mind obviously somewhere far from the campsite they were currently lying in. Finally, he spoke softly, âI donât even know who I am anymore.â
Simon wasnât quite sure how he was supposed to respond to that, so he let another silence settle between them as he gently entwined his hand with Jaceâs. âI know who you are,â Simon said, surprising himself as well as Jace. âYouâre brave and strong and kind. You love cats and babies and roses.â He turned his head and saw Jace watching him. Their eyes met and Simon continued, âI know who you are, Jace, and Iâm in love with you.â
It was the first time either of them had said those words. Simon had always known heâd be the first to say it, he just thought that heâd wait more than six weeks of dating to do so. It was the truth, though. He was in love with Jace, he had been since high school.
âIâm in love with you too, Simon,â Jace murmured, moving closer so they were closer together. He wasnât quite high enough to kiss Simonâs lips, so he pressed a kiss to Simonâs shoulder before pushing himself up on his hand so he could kiss him properly. Simon could still taste the sweetness of the sâmores Jace had eaten earlier and he smiled against Jaceâs lips.
âMaybe we should go inside the tent,â Simon suggested.
Jace grinned. âYes, we should definitely do that,â he agreed, standing up and helping Simon to his feet before leading him by the hand to their tent.

a/n: first off, Iâm gifting this work to the amazingly patient @intangibelâ as a substitute for the fic I was supposed to write her for @shadowhuntersbetasâ Winter Fic Exchange (this one is much better, trust me). A huge thank you goes out to @tothebitterbetterendâ and @bookwhippedâ for doing such an amazing job of beta-ing this fic! It wouldnât be what it is without both of you, so thanks!!

ONE;
Pop music blared from the radio as all of the partygoers arranged themselves into a circle on the floor in the Lightwoodsâ basement. Simon grabbed a can of soda from the table in the corner, which held a half-eaten birthday cake and a variety of drinks and candy that had previously been arranged into neat piles, before wedging himself into the space between Clary and Alec. He didnât say anything because it was Isabelleâs birthday party but, in his opinion, sixteen was too old to play spin the bottle. Part of the reason was because heâd never actually kissed anyone before, but there was no way he was going to admit that. Heâd practiced with his pillow before, another thing that he wasnât going to admit â boy, had that been embarrassing when Rebecca walked in on him â and heâd fantasized about kissing someone, of course. It had just never happened.
Simon fidgeted nervously as Isabelle leaned forward to take her turn â birthday girl first! â and his heart pounded in his chest as the end of the bottle crawled past him and finally landed on Clary. He tried not to seem too interested when Clary and Izzyâs lips met, although he wasnât sure that it was really working.
They kept going around the circle and Simon could feel the tension building inside of him. He felt relieved every time the bottle landed on someone else â even though he knew that it would just make things worse when it got to his turn. When Clary and Lydia spun it landed on Jace, when Jace spun it landed on Maureen, when Maureen spun it landed on Meliorn, and when Meliorn spun it landed on Alec. Before long, everyone had kissed and been kissed except for Simon. He could practically feel their eyes on him as he took his turn spinning the bottle.
Simon could barely watch as it slowed. He didnât know who he wanted it to land on â honestly, he didnât think he wanted it to point to any of them, but that wasnât how the game worked. The idea of having his first kiss in front of all his closest friends was mortifying and the fact that it would be with one of them made it so much worse.
The end of the bottle was pointing directly at Jace when it stopped and, as soon as it did, Simon felt heat rushing to his cheeks. He knew that the kiss wouldnât mean anything â Jace had already kissed three people over the course of the game â but Simonâs heart was still pounding and his hands were shaking ever so slightly, hopefully unnoticeable to everyone else.
Jaceâs face looked flushed as he leaned across the circle towards Simon, who felt a twist in his stomach at the prospect of kissing Jace. He heard Lydia giggle as the gap between his and Jaceâs lips got smaller and smaller â he tried to ignore it but it was enough to make him pause. He was already self-conscious about kissing someone and trying desperately to pretend that he wasnât.
The pounding in Simonâs chest got louder and louder, his heart flip-flopped when Jace rested his hand gently on the back of his neck and pressed their lips together. The kiss was warm and gentle and not at all like Simon had anticipated. It was softer and sweeter than he thought Jace was capable of. They pulled apart and Simon felt dazed as he sat back in his spot. Clary smirked and nudged him in the side â Simon scowled in response and Izzy and Maureen laughed, shattering any of the illusions heâd had about the others not knowing that it was his first kiss. The game continued with Alec kissing Meliorn again and Simon stealing glances at Jace â more specifically, Jaceâs lips.
âStupid,â Simon told himself, âstupid, stupid, stupid.â The kiss was meaningless, he needed to remember that.
TWO;
Golden sun filtered through Simonâs bedroom window, where he and Jace had their homework spread out on the floor. He absentmindedly chewed on the end of his pencil as he looked over the questions that their science teacher had assigned them earlier that day. Simon glanced over at Jace â who was lying on his stomach, looking like an angel in the soft afternoon light â and he couldnât help but think about the kiss at Izzyâs birthday party.
Simon tried to focus on his half of the questions â he was doing evens and Jace was doing odds â but all he could think about was Jaceâs lips pressed against his. It had been just over two weeks since the party and Clary still hadnât stopped teasing him. He wanted to talk about it with Jace, but he couldnât think of a way to bring it up casually.
The more Simon thought about it, the hardest it was to keep the questions inside. âHow many people have you kissed? Who was your first kiss? Am I a bad kisser?â Simon blurted out. The words ran together and there was hardly any space between the words.
Jace looked up at Simon, a smile playing at the corners of his lips. âWhy?â he asked, âAre you planning on kissing a lot of people?â He sat up, watching Simon intently.
Simon avoided Jaceâs gaze â which was a mix of amused and interested â his cheeks were on fire. This was a bad idea, he never should have said anything. âJust forget it,â he muttered, going back to pretending to do his homework.
âNo,â Jace replied. âNo way.â He scooted closer to Simon, so close that their knees brushed. âWho do you want to kiss?â He grinned, enjoying the fact that he was making Simon squirm.
âNo one,â Simon answered, shoving Jace playfully. âGet back to work,â he said, pointing at Jaceâs notebook and smiling despite himself. Jace didnât say anything, but he still had an infuriating smile on his face.
âNot until you tell me who you plan on kissing.â Jace was obviously not going to drop the subject and Simon definitely regretted bringing it up.
âNo one!â Simon repeated, his voice getting louder. He could feel his face burning as he continued. âI was just wondering if I was any good becauseâŚâ he paused, dropping his voice so it was barely above a whisper and focusing his gaze on his hands, âyou were my first kiss.â The last part came out in a rush, like it was all one word.
Simon looked up at Jace and their eyes met â there was something mischievous twinkling in their depths. âYeah, Clary told me,â he admitted. Silence stretched between them and Simon wanted to say something but he didnât know what. Before heâd thought of something, Jace spoke again. âYou were pretty good at kissing, considering it was your first time.â There was another brief pause. âIf you want to practice, Iâve been told that Iâm a fantastic teacher,â Jace said with a suggestive smirk.
Simon must have misheard. There was no way Jace was offering what he thought he was offering. âWâŚwhat?â Simon stammered.
Jace laughed and Simon felt his heart do a flip. âYou can practice kissing with me if you want,â Jace repeated. âItâs only fair of me. I mean, I was your first kiss,â he elaborated, running his fingers through his hair.
Simon stared at him for a moment, his eyes lingering on Jaceâs lips. Before he could even fully comprehend the situation, he agreed.
Jace grinned and moved even closer â something Simon hadnât thought possible. Butterflies fluttered in Simonâs stomach as Jaceâs hands cupped his face gently. Their lips met softly and Simon felt like he was melting â into Jace, because of Jace.
This time was different than the first time they kissed â there was no one watching, it wasnât part of a game, and there was a tenderness that hadnât been there before. Jaceâs hand trailed along the side of Simonâs neck, sending goosebumps down his spine.
Simon wrapped his arms around Jaceâs waist, pulling him closer as he kissed Jace back with an intensity he didnât know he possessed. He got so wrapped up in Jace â the way he smelled and the way he tasted â that he didnât hear the footsteps outside of his door or his sister slowly opening it.
Rebecca cleared her throat from the doorway and Jace and Simon pulled apart like theyâd been burned.
âWhat, uh, what are you guys doing?â she asked, a teasing grin on her face.
âNothing,â Simon retorted â fully aware that Rebecca had seen enough to know exactly what was happening. âGet out of my room,â he stood up and slammed the door, but he could hear Rebecca laughing in the hallway.
âSorry,â Simon muttered to Jace as he flopped back down onto the floor.
âNo problem,â Jace smiled. âWe should probably get back to work anyway,â he suggested, moving away from Simon to lie down in front of his textbook again.
âYeah,â Simon nodded, going back to his work. They did their homework in relative silence until theyâd finished all of it and Jace had to go home for dinner.
Rebecca teased Simon about it after Jace left and Simon told her the same thing heâd been telling himself since it happened.
âIt didnât mean anything.â
THREE;
Bright orange sparks crawled into the night sky and laughter echoed throughout Simonâs back yard â summer was quickly coming to a close and they wanted to have one last party before school started again. Simon wasnât sure who had suggested it, and he wasnât sure why he didnât opt out, but before he realized what was happening, they were playing truth or dare.
âSimon!â Clary exclaimed after completing her dare, âTruth or dare?â
Simon thought it over for a moment. He knew what the question would be if he chose truth â Clary had been trying to get him to admit his crush on Jace since before summer began â but he was sure that Clary would find a way to get him to admit it either way. âDare?â he chose, preparing himself for something awkward.
Clary exchanged a glace with Izzy that said âI told you soâ before turning her attention back to Simon. âI dare you to kiss the hottest boy here,â she said without skipping a beat, a knowing smile on her face. she was trying to force him to kiss Jace again â Simon regretted ever telling her about the moment in his bedroom â and for a moment Simon considered kissing Raj or Meliorn, just to ruin her plan.
But Simon wanted to kiss Jace again. Badly.
He didnât want to kiss someone in front of all his friends again. It had been awkward enough the first time â although this wouldnât be his first kiss, so it wasnât quite as mortifying. Simon took a deep breath and pushed himself up out of his lawn chair. He didnât want to make a beeline towards Jace, but he wanted to get the damn thing over with. He was hyper-aware of everything â the way his heart was pounding in his chest, the hot flush of his cheeks (although he tried to blame that on the bon fire) â as he carefully made his way around the circle. Maureen giggled when he walked past her and Simon shot her a glare before he stopped in front of Jace.
âI knew youâd choose me,â Jace said with a cocky grin as he stood up.
âDonât make me regret it,â Simon muttered quietly, unable to stop himself from smiling too. Before Jace could say anything else, Simon leaned in and pressed a kiss to Jaceâs waiting lips. It was quick, chaste, and Clary groaned when they pulled apart. âThat wasnât a kiss!â she exclaimed, âReally kiss him, Simon!â
âYou heard her,â Jace murmured, tilting his head slightly, the ghost of a laugh in his voice. He kissed Simon again and it felt like everyone else just melted away â in that moment there was nothing but Jace and Simon never wanted it to end. When it did, it was way too soon for Simonâs liking.
He couldnât stand looking Jace in the eye afterwards, so he quickly turned around to head back to his chair. He caught the tail end of another look exchanged between Clary and Izzy and shook his head before flopping back down into his chair. All eyes were still on him, though, because it was his turn to choose who was next. âUh, Maureen,â he said finally, âtruth or dare?â
Simon didnât really pay much attention as the game continued, he was too busy replaying the moment of Jace kissing him over and over again. It didnât really mean anything â it couldnât, not when it was brought about by a game designed by children as a tool to humiliate each other. He didnât look up again, not until Jace was standing right in front of him, staring down at him expectantly.
âWhat?â Simon asked.
âJace chose dare,â Alec filled him in, his voice bored, âand Clary gave him the same dare she gave you ââ
âSo stand up,â Jace interrupted, helping a dazed Simon to his feet.
Simon blinked numbly for a moment â there was no way this was happening. It was a dream. Jace wouldnât possibly choose to kiss him. Not over Meliorn. Or Raj. Or any of the guys currently sitting in the circle.
But he had, and Simon felt his heart flutter as Jace took control and their lips met gently. The only thing going through Simonâs mind was Jaceâs name â even after they pulled apart.
The fire got lower and lower until it was nothing but embers and Simon was still thinking about Jace. Part of him was convinced that it had been some kind of elaborate daydream, the other part kept wondering what it all meant. Did Jace like him? Did he feel the same way Simon did?
âNo,â Simon rationalized. âThere was no way Jace liked him back.â
+ONE;
Storm clouds hung overhead and thunder rumbled in the distance, barely noticeable over the thrum of the music inside. Simon could practically taste the humidity in the air as he took a deep breath, leaning his head back against the side of the house. He knew he was being ridiculous, but he needed a break from the noise and excitement inside. He wouldnât admit it â not when his relationship with Jace had just gotten back to normal, or as close to what it had been before theyâd kissed at Izzyâs party almost a year ago â but seeing Jace with someone else felt like a punch in the gut.
Clary didnât understand â Simon didnât think that she would. Everyone sheâd ever had a crush on liked her back, things were easy for her when it came to love. She had just kind of fallen into her relationship with Izzy and they were already talking about moving in together after graduation next y ear. Her advice was always to be straightforward and just tell Jace the truth, which was the complete opposite of anything Simon would actually do.
He was just about to text Clary that he was leaving â last time heâd seen Clary, she and Isabelle had been holding hands and looking for a room where they could be alone, and he didnât want to walk in on that again â when the door opened. Simon didnât turn to see who it was until he heard them speak.
âHey, Simon, Iâve been looking for you,â Jace said, clapping Simonâs shoulder jovially. He was grinning and his hair fell into his face in the way that Simon felt was an attack. âWhat are you doing out here? Youâre missing the party.â
âI think Iâm just gonna go,â Simon replied, stuffing his hands in his pockets and staring down at his shoes.
âWhat? Why?â Jace asked. He looked concerned, and Simon didnât think that was fair, especially considering the fact that heâd come to this party with another guy.
âIâm just not into it, I guess. If you see Clary can you tell her I left?â Simon didnât wait for a response before starting down the walk.
âLet me walk with you,â Jace said, following Simon to the sidewalk.
âWonât Victor miss you?â Simon asked, unable to keep the jealousy out of his voice.
Jace stopped. âIs that what this is about?â He grabbed Simonâs arm and spun him around. âIs that why youâve been so down tonight?â
âI⌠I donât know what youâre talking about,â Simon lied, meeting Jaceâs gaze for the first time since heâd come outside. Jace just stared at him, a disbelieving expression on his face and Simon could feel himself cracking.
âWhat do you want me to say?â Simon finally blurted out. âThat Iâm jealous, that I love you, that Iâve thought about kissing you every day since Izzyâs birthday party thatââ
âYou love me?â Jace interrupted, his voice softer than Simon had ever heard it before.
Simon could feel the weight of Jaceâs eyes on him and his face burned. âI, well, IâŚâ Simon stuttered. âMaybe. But I know that you donât feel the same way and thatâs totallyââ
Jace interrupted Simon again, this time by pressing their lips together gently. Simon was surprised at first, but quickly melted into it. He let himself lean against Jace, whose hand was carefully cupping his cheek.
âI love you, too,â Jace murmured after he pulled away.
Simon eagerly kissed Jace again, all the desperation and want that had built up inside of him crashing free. His hands were tangled in Jaceâs hair when a loud clap of thunder sounded overhead and the rain started to fall in fat drops. âWe should probably go inside,â he suggested, turning to go back towards the house.
âNot so fast,â Jace grinned, pulling Simon close to him. They locked eyes for a moment, their foreheads touching, just sharing each otherâs space. The next thing Simon knew they were kissing again â and not because of a ridiculous dare or spin the bottle.
It took a moment, but Simon realized that heâd been wrong the entire time. Jace actually loved him back.

since I have not had the energy/motivation/time to create anything for Jimon Week like Iâd planned, I decided to dig up this gem from August that just happens to suit todayâs prompt - animals.
