TITLE: Mister Babadook
AUTHOR: Unknown; possibly Amelia Vanek, or an external manifestation of her repressed grief
ORIGIN: The Babadook (movie, 2014, written and directed by Jennifer Kent)
A delightful pop-up book for children featuring a funny little top hat-wearing creature who wants to come visit! You can tell he's there when there's a rumbling, and three sharp knocks ā "ba BA-ba DOOK! DOOK! DOOK!" ā but if you let him in, he'll never, ever want to leave, and soon you'll wish you were dead! He'll take off his disguise and try YOU on for size, letting out all of the darkest thoughts and feelings you've been trying not to feel since your husband's death⦠like maybe your son should have died instead of him, and maybe everything would be better, and just so much easier if he were to die now so you don't have to think those thoughts ever, ever again. If it's in a word, or it's in a look, you can't get rid of the Babadook⦠but maybe if you come to terms with your unacknowledged trauma you can learn to live with it.
I. Picture books ā Pop-up books ā Jump scares
II. Children's books ā Monsters and demons ā It's only a story... right?
III. Cursed objects ā The cat came back ā Your own inner demons
This is based on the limited edition official replica pop-up book that Causeway Films (the movie's production company) crowdfunded, commissioning paper engineerĀ Simon Arizpe and illustrator Alexander Juhasz and published by Insight Editions. Arizpe says that they matched all the specs of the movie prop, including color, binding, and trim size, and used the pages shown in the movie while adding new ones to complete the story. I edited the image to try and replicate its more beat-up look after Amelia attempts to destroy the book but it reappears on her doorstep.

TITLE: Vampyr, aka the Slayer's Handbook
AUTHOR: Members of the Watchers Council, with later additions by others
ORIGIN: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (television show, episode 1x1, "Welcome to the Hellmouth," 1997)
This tome, first compiled far back in the mists of history, was the first and most complete attempt to record and codify the laws of the magical world. As its title suggests, it was originally a study of vampires specifically, but its scope has since increased dramatically. Its role as a mere record has likewise changed, becoming tied to the laws of magic themselves to the degree that the pages became blank when magic was erased from the Earth (a long story of arguable canonicity), and slowly rewritten when magic returned. During this time, it even gained the ability to change the laws of magic themselves based on anything written onto its pages. It is unclear if this property extended to all copies of the Handbook, or just to the particular one we have on loan from Watcher Rupert Giles.
I. Handbooks and manuals ā Jobs and workplaces ā The Chosen One
II. Reference ā Spellbooks and grimoires (neutral) ā Complete magical compendia

Hey, look, I'm still doing this thing! This image came from the original prop, fixed up a little bit to re-cover the overtly religious words giving away that the prop was made from an old Bible (The Pictorial Bible from 1875, to be specific, according to an unsourced statement on the Buffy wiki article.)
Oh, and just so we're all on the same page: fuck Joss Whedon.
pssst are you sick of me throwing mikototsu at you yet D; 17, 20, or 23
( made all 3 into a little series here because they fit. also because i donāt know the meaning of the terms āshort ficā or āor' - only 'train wreck without brakes' )17. things you said that I wish you hadnātĀ :
didnāt ask for this.Mikoto paced like something caged that wasnāt meant to be.Heād overexerted the deadly energy coursing through him in a fight ā sans Totsuka at his side. Normally he could shift down to preserve his level, return to neutral. But after putting down another syndicate stirring up shit close to where the Red King kept his den, he couldnāt shake the drive to throttle whatever came close with both hands.āDeep breaths, King. The breath is center of all. It stabilizes and revitalizes~ āKusanagi smoked while the resident therapist did his best quoting a past yoga instructor.
Coddling Mikoto, he feared, wasnāt doing any long term favors. He should learn to settle himself down. Totsuka seemed almost the toy you give a child whenheās throwing a fit. But what do you do when the child is a grown manwho wants you to remember what heās like without the securityblanketā the sort of hell heās experiencing under the surface?āIām goinā out.āMikoto was donebeing watched over like he couldnāt be trusted; knew they couldnātkeep him from the door.āItād be best foreveryone involved,ā Izumo held a calm tone, āif you stay put forright now. Honest youāre not in condition to go wanderinā intoanother scuffle.āāHonest?ā theRed King wouldnāt cross gazes with him. He respected his friendāsadvice too much.āFor everyoneinvolved Iām better off dead.āThe door slammed.
āSuch drama.āA side glance foundthe little flaw in Totsukaās supportive expression. Otherwise hemirrored the exasperated shake of the bartenderās head.Mikoto could flingangry words around all day, but not all of them bounced off of hisvassal.
20. things you saidthat I wasnāt meant to hearĀ :
āYou too?āAnna shifted away when Totsuka propped his chin on the edge of her bed.Heād decided to camp out on the floor close by after she had askedhim to stay. But she didnāt want to talk.Moments went beforethe little girl replied with an almost-teary nod.āItās just a roughday, isnāt it? The moon is in a bad spot or something,ā he tiltedhis head, glanced up at the window and squinted one eye shut. āSeethere, just a little too far to the left. It makes King mad. But thatwill change. We just need to make sure youāre alright.āAnna clung to Mikototightest, but the longer she had known Totsuka, the more she beganconnect the dots between the two ā the messy constellation theymade. The more her powerscaused her to fear for his fragile red.āI will be fine.āAnna had adapted tolulling herself into a false sense of security. There was no way forher to live normally otherwise. Worry was in the nights andunfiltered dreams that lay out of her range of control. And wheneverMikotoās powers gave him trouble, hers had a way of syncing up.āBut⦠if youstay so close to him something bad is going to happen.āSheād told Totsukasomething similar before, but not with the same waiver in her tiredlittle voice. When he was more of a stranger to her.āBad things havehappened,ā laughing was in bad taste but he did so on accident.āAnd good things. Weāre guaranteed more of both. Besides, I try not to stayĀ tooĀ close to King⦠whenever he insists for otherwise.āAnna noted the quieter fineprint of his words, the way his eyes moved down."Heās the type that needs allll thisspace. Some wide open place with less people around would suit him better than here donāt you think?ā
An unfortunatemoment for Mikoto to happen by the doorway. Heād already beenfeeling out of it lately. Out of place, out of favor. He didnātexactly need to hear Totsuka confirm that. Not that he blamed him. TheRed King slunk off before he could hear anything else.āI just want himto have a choice. Iām not worried. But we love King and having him soclose, right?ā Ā Anna agreed with hertwo end fingers twined around his two.āThen thatās howitās supposed to work out.āćļ¾ļ½„*dćļ¾ļ½„*dćļ¾ļ½„*dļ¾ćļ¾ļ½„*dćļ¾23. things you said[to make me stay ]āIf I asked yātomove in with meā¦ā Mikoto kept breaking what little eye contactthey had going when he finally spit the words out,āā¦would you?āTotsuka smiled, swinging the bags of groceries in his hands.āWell given thatyouāre living in the bar itās not really up to us.āIt tickled him thatKing was even thinking about these things. Because Totsuka dreamed upwhat playing house properly would be like all the time. Reality, healso knew (for once), wouldnāt be quite as sugary.āDidnāt meanthere,ā Mikoto lowered his head. In each shop window they passedhis eyes seemed to check their reflection. It looked just right withTotsuka beside him.āThereās room atmy place, you know that. Room for as long as youād like. Longerās preferred⦠actually.āSomehow the conceptof it felt strange no matter how many times Mikoto stayed over.Perhaps it was some shread of instinct calling the Red King toprovide a home for them to share all on his own. Too bad lazinessalways wins out in the end. Ā āYeah? Annoyingbrat like you doesnāt get much other company, I bet,āHis vassal yelpedhaving the top of his head grabbed and tussled.āKing!āHe still liked theway Mikoto looked him over after letting go.āKeep it likethatā meant heād be following Totsuka all the way home.
