          “I already said I’d help, which is why you need to shush all your criticism of my very good plan and help me pick a good soundtrack.”   He really couldn’t afford to wind up with a reputation as someone who could just be dialed up to help with off-the-record angel business, so it was paramount that he make the whole ordeal as roundabout as possible.

“You’ve died before right?  Hindsight being what it is, if you could choreograph your return from the grave which song would you pick?”  Gabriel barely looked up from the phone in his hand as he asked the question. “These playlists are not what I hoped they’d be.” 

“You’ve been kicking it planet-side for a while right?  Seen a lot of folks die. Managed the books.”  He was perfectly confident that this was a normal way to reconnect with an estranged sibling (he considered all of them to be estranged).

“If I were to Mothman that gas leak that’s due in Tampa next week would it mess things up?”

Now this was something strange, something unsettling, something familiar.  But Gabriel had been having a rough time of it since he’d been pulled back into the land of the living and he was learning to take it all in stride.

“Have you ever been to Polk county, down in Florida?  Because I could swear I know you from somewhere...”  

“You’ve got like a ledger or a book or something right?”  Gabriel asked around a mouthful of kit-kat.

“Did I pop up in there every time I faked my death or could you tell the difference?”  He knew he was good, at faking his death (good enough to trick the devil, in fact) but he’d always wondered exactly how good.

Lately it felt like Gabriel had been running into angels and demons everywhere he went, which wasn’t ideal for someone trying to keep a low profile.  But at least they could provide a unique perspective on some things he was workshopping.
