On a totally platonic date with Ryan. God I missed him so much.
Okay sorry maybe this is already a popular theory. But I was just thinking about how interesting it is that Barb got a title card in the last episode. That isn't all that common on this show. I might have missed more, but as far as I can recall, there have only been... Nine? Title cards? in the entire show. With four of those from the pilot alone:
One for each of the main story protagonists up til this point (Lucy, Maximus, and The Ghoul)
"The End" which is the first thing we see introducing the show in the pilot. Also introducing the major event which effectively makes this world what it is, and ties the past, present, all characters and all themes together.
"The Beginning" at the start of episode 3, which is the first flashback we get of Cooper Howard as an actor pretending to be The Ghoul, which then slides into him breaking character and meeting up with his wife Barb once he's off set.
"The Man Who Knew," which is the introduction in s2e1 to the real Mr. House. Who is one of the only canonical characters we've seen cross the game -> show boundary, who exists in some form or another both before and after the war. And who seems to be unusually clued into the arc of the narrative.
"The Alaskan Front" (this is the only one where I'm not really sure of the specific narrative significance, except that it might help the audience better understand what's going on, as a flashback-within-a-flashback. Or just as a way of explaining modern elements originated in a pre-nuclear war (deathclaws & power armor, & important backstory for how Cooper became The Ghoul, for example)
One more I know but. can't remember
And now Barb's.
To the best of my knowledge, no other characters/situations get title cards, and the "Barb" title card is the first we've seen in the past since s1e3.
To me, this... very heavily implies that she is now not just a character in the story. But one of the main protagonist characters.
Then I realized (because I don't always pay attention right away to episode names) that the title of that same episode is "The Other Player."
And while yeah, on its face this refers to an episode with a lot more focus on The Enclave as a major "player" in the forces behind the Fallout universe? This show is infamous for events, names, plot points, etc having multiple meanings. In particular, being in conversation with meanings that might have one straightforward interpretation to a TV-only audience, but an additional layer of meaning to their gaming audience.
In this case, "player" definitely refers to a global force on the world stage of the show.
But to gamers? The word "player" is synonymous with "player character" or "main character" in everyday terms.
Suggesting, to me when paired with Barb's unusual title card, that Barb is "The Other Player." A twist, in that she is not just a side character, but potentially a fourth protagonist
