bat fun fact: spectral bats seem to do little 4 wide hugs with their big wings and are particularly family oriented for bats. [source and further reading]

bat fun fact: bats have relatively complex social lives that don't really follow what we'd know or predict of the little mammals. It doesn't help that there are well over a thousand different species. although it does seem like male led groups are not common at all. most common are roosts of female bats and their communal group of children. male bats can either be part of the group, solitary for most of the year, or sometimes form their own group. theories on why bats group together vary and can't really be applied to all those bat species. for example, while huddling for warmth is necessary in colder climates, tropical bats also make roosts. Bat social behavior is very interesting and that's why this post is a little later than the others.

One of the main prey insects shown when depicting bats echolocating are moths. Which makes moths evolving to have eye patterns very cool.

bat fun fact: most bats spend only around 20% of time emitting sound to spend the rest of it listening to the results. Although there are some bat species that can scream and listen at the same time such as horseshoe bats that spend 50% of their time screaming. [source]

bat fun fact: while I was skimming this paper on group dynamics, it seems like their mother and daughter pairs would stay in the same community a large majority of the time. Complete families also tend to be in the same community. If a female bat did change community, they would switch with their mother or daughter. [source].

bat fun fact: baby bats grow relatively quickly. within a month to 6 weeks, they go from blind, furless things, to being capable of flight. [source]
